The Taj Mahal and its garden seen from an angle across the lawns in soft light

The Golden Triangle can be a very romantic honeymoon if you design it with that in mind. The Taj Mahal is the obvious draw, but the trip works best when you add palace stays, private moments and enough rest.

This guide shows how to turn the classic route into a couple's trip.

Stage

Romantic idea

Delhi

A calm hotel, a private evening drive past India Gate

Agra

Sunrise at the Taj, sunset from Mehtab Bagh

Jaipur

A heritage hotel, a quiet dinner

Extra

A night in Udaipur or a lake stay

How long to allow

Six to eight days is better than five. It gives you rest days and avoids the feeling of being rushed. For the standard route, see the 5-day itinerary.

Agra: the Taj at its best

Go at sunrise, when the crowds are thinner and the light is soft. Then see the Taj again from across the river at Mehtab Bagh in the evening. See our sunrise or sunset guide and the Agra beyond the Taj guide.

Jaipur: palaces and dinners

Stay in a heritage hotel and eat at a rooftop or palace restaurant. Visit Amber Fort early to avoid the crowds. See the palace hotel guide and the Amber Fort guide.

Add a lake

If you can extend the trip, a few days in Udaipur turn it into a proper honeymoon. See the Udaipur honeymoon guide and the Rajasthan extension route.

Season

October to March is the most comfortable. December and January can be foggy, so keep the Taj sunrise flexible. See the season guide.

Practical tips

  1. Tell the hotels it is a honeymoon. Many add small touches.

  2. Book early entry for the Taj.

  3. Add rest time after the long drives.

  4. Use a private car with a driver.

  5. Check closing days, including the Taj on Fridays.
