The Taj Mahal reflected in calm water, Agra

A Golden Triangle honeymoon itinerary 7 days long gives each city room to breathe: two nights in Delhi, two in Agra and two in Jaipur, with a final morning for departure. The drives are long, so the plan keeps them in the morning and leaves the afternoons open. Each stop has one anchor, one quiet hour and one long dinner.

For the general romantic guide, with advice on season and pacing, read our Golden Triangle honeymoon guide. This post is the day-by-day version, with drive times, hotels we know and the fees you will pay on the way.

Days 1 and 2: Delhi

Day 1: arrival and an easy evening

Arrive, rest and keep the first evening free. A drive past India Gate at dusk is a gentle introduction. The Imperial, in Connaught Place, is an Art Deco hotel from 1936 with garden-facing rooms and a terrace restaurant. Dine in the hotel and sleep early.

Day 2: Humayun's Tomb and old Delhi

Visit Humayun's Tomb in the morning, when the light is soft and the garden is quiet. Foreign visitors pay about ₹550 to ₹600 and Indian visitors about ₹35 to ₹50, according to our guide. Spend the afternoon resting, then book a long dinner. If you are keen on markets, Old Delhi is better in the early morning than in the heat.

Days 3 and 4: Agra

Day 3: Delhi to Agra, the Taj at sunset

Drive after breakfast. Allow about four hours. In the late afternoon, see the Taj from across the river at Mehtab Bagh, or from the terrace of your hotel if it faces the monument. The Oberoi Amarvilas is about 600 metres from the Taj, and its page says every room has a view of it. Dine at your hotel.

Day 4: the Taj at first light, then Agra Fort

Go to the Taj early. The grounds cost ₹50 for Indian visitors and ₹1,100 for foreign visitors, with the mausoleum an extra ₹200. Children and fee details are in our Taj Mahal ticket price guide. The Taj is closed to general visitors on Fridays, so plan around that. For timing, see sunrise or sunset at the Taj and the Taj visitor guide. Return to the hotel for breakfast and a rest. Visit Agra Fort in the afternoon, then have a private dinner.

Days 5 and 6: Jaipur

Day 5: Agra to Jaipur

Leave after breakfast and stop at Fatehpur Sikri. Arrive in Jaipur by late afternoon. Rambagh Palace sits in 47 acres of garden, and the page notes peacocks crossing the lawns at dusk. Alsisar Haveli is smaller, built in 1892 and still owned by the same family, with courtyards and a garden pool. Choose Rambagh for scale, and Alsisar for a quieter, more personal stay.

Day 6: Amber Fort and a palace dinner

Go to Amber Fort early, before the heat and the crowds. Entry is ₹100 for Indian visitors and ₹500 for foreign visitors. A composite ticket costs ₹300 to ₹400 for Indians and ₹1,000 for foreigners and covers Amber, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Nahargarh. See our Amber Fort guide. Keep the afternoon free, then have a late dinner.

Day 7: departure

Fly out of Jaipur, or drive to Delhi if you must. Allow a full day for the road.

Tell each hotel that it is a honeymoon. Some may arrange small touches such as flowers or a dessert. Do not assume this unless it is confirmed in writing.

What a honeymoon version leaves out

A standard Golden Triangle trip packs in sights. This one drops the second tier: Qutub Minar, Red Fort, City Palace and Hawa Mahal interiors. You can add them if you wish, but each one costs a morning. Our 5-day Golden Triangle itinerary shows a faster version.

What is not romantic

The drives are long. Delhi traffic is slow. Agra is dusty and busy near the Taj gates. In December and January, fog can delay the Taj sunrise and the roads. Summer is hot. Be honest with yourself about the pace.

What to wear

Dress modestly at monuments, with covered shoulders and knees. Wear shoes that slip off easily, since you may remove them near the mausoleum. In winter, carry a warm layer for early mornings, and in summer, a hat and water.

When to go

October to March is the comfortable window, with November to February the safest. December and January can be foggy, so keep the Taj morning flexible. April to June is hot. Our best time guide goes month by month.

Our advice

Keep three bases and no more. Give the Taj your best morning. Book hotels with views or gardens, because you will spend your afternoons in them. Ask for the Jaipur-to-Delhi leg to be a flight if possible. Tell every hotel that it is a honeymoon, and ask what they can arrange, without assuming. We plan this route around the Taj's timings and the drives, not the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for a Golden Triangle honeymoon?

Yes. Seven days gives two nights in each city and a final morning. It is relaxed, not rushed.

How many nights in each city?

Two in Delhi, two in Agra and two in Jaipur. Agra can be one night if you are short of time.

What is the best month for a Golden Triangle honeymoon?

November to February is the safest window. Expect fog in December and January.

Should we fly from Jaipur?

If you can. The road to Delhi takes five to six hours, and a flight saves the last long drive.

Which hotels are best for couples?

The Oberoi Amarvilas for Taj views, Rambagh Palace for scale, and Alsisar Haveli for a quieter feel. Choose by the mood you want.

Can we add Udaipur?

Yes, but it needs more days. See our Golden Triangle with a Rajasthan extension.
