The Golden Triangle can be a good first India trip for a family. The sights are big and visual, the routes are short and the hotels are used to families. The risks are heat, long drives and too much in one day.

This guide shows how to keep it fun for children.

Best sights for kids

Pacing the days

Do one major sight in the morning, rest in the hotel in the afternoon and add a short outing before dusk. Avoid back-to-back forts. A pool day in Jaipur works well after the Agra leg.

Drives and comfort

Use a private car with a driver, with snacks, water and wet wipes on board. Ask for stops on long stretches. See our Delhi to Jaipur guide.

Food and health

Hotels serve simple, familiar food. Drink bottled water, and avoid raw salads and street food for younger children. See our food safety guide.

Practical tips

  1. Check ticket rules for children at each sight.

  2. Carry sun hats and light clothes.

  3. Keep a day free after arrival, to recover from jet lag.

  4. Avoid Fridays for the Taj Mahal.

  5. Ask for connecting rooms where possible.
