Kerala Honeymoon Itinerary: 7 Days from Fort Kochi to Varkala
A 7-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary: Fort Kochi, Munnar, an Alleppey houseboat and Varkala, with real drive times, hotels and the best months.

The best Kerala honeymoon itinerary is seven days, four bases and one long drive. Start with a quiet night in Fort Kochi. Spend two nights in the tea hills of Munnar, one night on a houseboat in Alleppey, and finish with two nights on the cliffs at Varkala. You arrive in Kochi and fly home from Thiruvananthapuram, so you never retrace a road.
This guide sets out that route day by day, with the real drive times and an honest note on the one day that tires people out. For a hotel-first view, read our honeymoon in Kerala stay guide. For the standard sightseeing version of this state, see the Kerala 7-day itinerary.
The route at a glance
Day | Where | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
1 | Fort Kochi | Arrive, rest, a slow walk and a quiet dinner |
2 to 3 | Munnar | Tea slopes, cool air, a private estate evening |
4 | Alleppey | A houseboat on the backwaters, one night afloat |
5 to 6 | Varkala | Cliff-top sunsets, the beach, an Ayurvedic massage |
7 | Thiruvananthapuram | Short transfer and departure |
The map explains the pacing. Kerala is narrow, but the roads are slow. A 100 km stretch can take four hours, so we plan around transfers and not around sights.
Drive times on this route
Leg | Distance | Time on the road |
|---|---|---|
Kochi airport to Fort Kochi | 40 km | 1 to 1.25 hours |
Kochi to Munnar | 125 to 130 km | 4 to 4.5 hours |
Munnar to Alleppey | 155 to 170 km | 4.5 to 5.5 hours |
Alleppey to Varkala | 125 to 135 km | 3 to 3.5 hours |
Varkala to Thiruvananthapuram | 50 km | 1.25 to 1.5 hours |
Distances come from our Kerala driving distances guide. The Munnar to Alleppey leg depends on the road you take, so confirm the route with your driver.
Day 1: Fort Kochi
Arrive, check in and stop. Most flights land at an awkward hour, and a honeymoon should not start with a sightseeing list.

The Chinese fishing nets at Fort Kochi.
In the late afternoon, walk the waterfront and the old lanes around Fort Kochi. Keep it short. Book dinner at a table you can reach on foot. A heritage hotel such as Eighth Bastion gives you a calm base in the old quarter. If you want more of the town, our Fort Kochi two-day guide has the detail, but a honeymoon needs only one evening of it.
Days 2 and 3: Munnar
Leave after breakfast for Munnar. The drive is 4 to 4.5 hours, and the road climbs through winding hills. Stop once for tea or coconut water and do not try to rush it.

The tea roads above Munnar.
Munnar is the cool break in the trip. Mornings are fresh, the tea slopes are green, and the evenings suit a blanket on a terrace. Choose a hotel on the slopes, not in the town. Scenic Munnar has rooms with private plunge pools, and Windermere Estate is a plantation-style stay with garden walks.
On day three, keep the plan light. Visit a tea estate in the morning, then return to the hotel. Book a late lunch, a walk on the estate and dinner at the property. Munnar rewards slow days.
The honest drawback: the road in and out is long, and it can be wet in the rains. Pack a light layer, because the nights are cool.
Day 4: Alleppey and the houseboat
This is the longest day. Plan five to six hours in the car, including a lunch stop on the way down from the hills. Aim to reach Alleppey by early afternoon, and board the houseboat in time for the evening cruise.

Houseboats on the Alleppey backwaters.
One night afloat is enough for most couples. You get a slow cruise, a private dinner on deck and an early start on the water. Read our houseboat stay guide for the practical details, and the candlelight dinner and private cruise guide for what to ask for.
If the day feels too long, there is a gentler option. Skip the hills and stay in Alleppey or Kumarakom for an extra night. Punnamada Resort in Alleppey and Taj Kumarakom are both lakeside resorts. Our Alleppey or Kumarakom guide helps you choose.
Days 5 and 6: Varkala
Leave the houseboat after breakfast and drive south. The road to Varkala takes 3 to 3.5 hours. You will arrive by early afternoon and have the evening free.

The cliff-top path above the sea at Varkala.
Varkala is the beach end of the trip. The red laterite cliff runs above the sea, with a path along the edge and a beach below. It is quieter than a big resort town, and the sunsets are the reason to come. Gateway Varkala sits on the cliff with sea views.
Use day six to do very little. Take a morning on the sand, book an Ayurvedic massage in the afternoon, and walk the cliff path at sunset. Our Kerala Ayurveda guide explains what a treatment involves. If you are choosing between beaches, see the Varkala or Kovalam guide.
Day 7: Departure from Thiruvananthapuram
The airport is 50 km from Varkala, about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. Book a late flight if you can. Allow extra time and leave early, because the coastal road is busy in the morning.
When to go
October to March is the strongest window for a Kerala honeymoon. Days are warm, the hills are cool and the backwaters are calm.
Month | What to expect |
|---|---|
October to November | Green after the rains, warm days, quieter hotels |
December to February | Best weather, and the busiest hotels. Book early |
March to May | Hotter and more humid. Munnar stays pleasant |
June to September | Monsoon. Heavy rain, lower rates, slower roads |
Our best time to visit Kerala guide has the month-by-month detail, and our Kerala monsoon guide covers the rains for couples who prefer quiet.
How a honeymoon version differs
Three changes make the same route feel different from a standard tour.
One main plan a day. A tea estate, a cruise, a cliff walk. Nothing more.
Fewer hotel changes. We use four bases, and every one has at least a full evening free.
A private car with a driver. Shared transfers add stops and waiting time that you will not want.
Tell each hotel it is your honeymoon when you book. Many will arrange a small gesture, but ask in advance and do not assume it.
Our advice
Do not add Thekkady to a seven-day honeymoon. It sits on a separate road, and it turns this itinerary into a week of long drives. If you love wildlife, extend to nine or ten days and add it between Munnar and Alleppey. Otherwise keep to four bases and spend the saved time on the cliff at Varkala.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need for a Kerala honeymoon?
Seven days works well for Fort Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey and Varkala. Five days is possible if you drop Varkala, but the pace is faster.
What is the best month for a Kerala honeymoon?
December to February has the best weather. October, November and March also work, and each is quieter.
Is one night on a houseboat enough?
For most couples, yes. One night gives you the cruise, the dinner and the morning on the water.
Is Kerala a good honeymoon destination in the monsoon?
It can suit quiet, flexible couples, since rates fall and the hills are green. Roads are slower and beach time is limited, so choose other months if the weather matters.
Should we add Thekkady?
Only if you have nine or ten days. It adds a long drive each way and works better as a wildlife stop than as a romantic one.
Which airport should we fly into and out of?
Fly into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram. This route runs north to south, so you never double back.
