Ask ten people when to visit Kerala and you will hear ten answers. That is because the state is not one climate. It is a narrow strip between the sea and the Western Ghats, and the weather changes sharply from the coast to the hills.

So the useful question is not "when is Kerala at its best?" It is "what do you want to do?" Backwaters, beaches, tea hills and wildlife all have different sweet spots. This guide walks through the year, then matches the seasons to the trip you have in mind.

The short answer

October to March is the easiest window. The rain has cleared, the air is drier, and the backwaters, beaches and hills are all comfortable. It is also the busiest season, so the best rooms and boats go first.

June to September is the monsoon. It is greener, quieter and much better than its reputation. It is also the traditional season for Ayurveda.

April and May are hot and humid. The hills are the exception, and they are lovely.

Month by month

December to February: the classic season

Days are warm and dry, and nights are pleasantly cool. This is the postcard Kerala. Houseboat cruises are at their most comfortable, beaches are calm, and the light over the water is soft.

The hills turn properly cool. In Munnar, early mornings can be chilly enough for a jacket, and mist lies in the tea valleys until mid-morning. Book early for Christmas and New Year, when rooms across the state fill up.

March: warm, still very good

Heat begins to build on the coast, but mornings and evenings stay pleasant. It is a good month if you want fewer crowds than the peak. Pair the backwaters with a few nights in the hills to keep cool.

April and May: heat and humidity

The coast is hot and humid, and afternoons on the water can feel heavy. This is not the best time for backwaters or beaches. It is, however, a fine time for the highlands. Munnar and Thekkady stay comfortable, and tea-estate walks are a pleasure.

Pre-monsoon showers can arrive late in May. They are usually short, dramatic and followed by clear air.

June to September: the monsoon

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June and stays through September. Rain is heavy at times, but it is rarely constant. Many days bring showers in bursts with dry spells between them.

What you get in return is a landscape at its most vivid. Paddy fields are a glowing green, waterfalls are full, and the air is clean. Crowds thin out. Resort rates soften.

This is also the classic season for Ayurveda. The cooler, damp air is considered ideal for treatments, and many wellness retreats are at their most focused now. Our Ayurveda Wellness Retreat is designed for exactly this kind of stay. If you want to travel in the rain with a plan, look at our Monsoon Escape.

Be realistic about what the rain limits. Houseboat cruising is restricted on the roughest days, hill roads can be slow after heavy rain, and some outdoor activities pause. A good itinerary builds in flexibility.

October and November: the return of the sun

The rains taper off, often with a second, lighter burst of showers in October. By November the state is fresh, green and warming into the dry season. It is a lovely shoulder period. You get lush scenery, good weather and slightly gentler prices than December.

Match the season to the trip

  • Backwater houseboat night: November to February is most comfortable. See what a night afloat is like in our houseboat guide.

  • Beaches (Kovalam, Varkala): December to March. Seas are calmer and swimming is safer. Currents are strong in the monsoon.

  • Tea hills of Munnar: October to March for clear views, or April and May to escape the heat.

  • Wildlife at Periyar: Boat rides run through the year, but sightings are best in the drier months, when animals come to the lake to drink.

  • Ayurveda and wellness: June to September, though good programmes run all year.

  • Spice country and plantations: Almost any month. Cardamom, pepper and coffee estates are lovely year-round.

  • Honeymoon or anniversary: December to February for weather, or the monsoon for privacy and value.

Choose your base by season

The hills are your friend in summer. A stay at a plantation house such as Windermere Estate or a spice-garden resort like Spice Village keeps the heat away. In winter, add the coast. In the monsoon, put wellness and hills first and keep the backwaters short.
