Road winding through green tea plantations at Munnar, Kerala

Seven days is the length most visitors have for Kerala, and it is just enough to see the state's main chapters in order: a port city, a tea hill, a forest reserve, the backwaters and a beach.

The risk with seven days is overload. Kerala looks small on the map and drives slowly. This plan keeps four bases and avoids the one-night stops that eat the trip, and it tells you what to drop if you want a gentler pace.

Day by day

Day 1: Kochi

Arrive and keep the first day easy. Fort Kochi is the right place to land softly, with its old Dutch and Portuguese streets, the Chinese fishing nets and cafés. Read our two-day Fort Kochi guide if you want more depth, or the Mattancherry Palace guide for the Jew Town stop.

Day 2: Kochi to Munnar

The road climbs into the Western Ghats, and the temperature drops as you go. Allow a full day, stopping for waterfalls and a spice garden if you like. The best view comes in the last hour, when the tea comes into sight.

Day 3: Munnar

Spend a full day in the hills. Eravikulam National Park (home to the Nilgiri tahr) and a tea-estate visit are the core. Our Eravikulam guide and the Munnar tea-estate stay guide cover the details.

Day 4: Munnar to Thekkady

The drive is shorter, with a spice plantation tour on the way. Thekkady's cool evening air and plantation walks are the point. Check in early and keep the afternoon free.

Day 5: Thekkady to Alleppey

Take the early boat on Periyar Lake for the best wildlife chance, then drive to the backwaters in the afternoon. Our Periyar guide explains the options.

Day 6: Alleppey

This is the backwater day. A houseboat overnight is the classic choice. Read what to expect on a Kerala houseboat before you book.

Day 7: Alleppey to Kochi, or on to Varkala

Most visitors drive back to Kochi for a flight. If you have a day more, Varkala's cliff is a gentler ending, about 3 to 3.5 hours south. The Varkala and Kovalam guide helps with the choice.

What to cut if seven days feels tight

  • Drop Thekkady. Go from Munnar directly to Alleppey, and use the extra day in the hills.

  • Drop Munnar. Go from Kochi straight to Thekkady for a forest-and-spice break.

  • Add a beach night. Replace the Kochi return with a night in Varkala before you fly from Trivandrum.

Our places to visit in Kerala field guide shows how each stop compares.

When to go

October to February is the most comfortable and the busiest. The hills are cool, the roads are clear and the backwaters are calm. The monsoon, from June to September, is green and cheap, with Ayurveda treatments at their best, but the Munnar road is slower. See the month-by-month guide for the details.

How we would plan it

For a premium version, we keep the same route and adjust the pace. Use a private car and driver so you can stop where you like, choose one stay in each place that suits its character, and avoid same-day check-outs and check-ins. Our Kerala Hills and Spice itinerary and Kerala Backwaters and Ayurveda itinerary follow this shape, and the Kerala Classic Highlights journey builds them into one planned trip.
