The best family resorts in Munnar are not the biggest. They are the ones that suit your children's ages, sit close enough to the sights to avoid long drives, and give you a warm, safe room after a cold evening. Munnar has few large resorts and many small estate stays, so the choice is about layout, location and what is on site.

This guide helps you choose. It covers where to base yourselves, what to check in a room, and how two properties we know compare. For sights and a day plan, read our Munnar with kids guide.

Family resorts in Munnar: the answer in one view

Munnar sits high in the Western Ghats, at roughly 1,500 metres. The air is cool, the roads wind, and mornings are often misty. Most stays are built on hillsides and are reached by steps or sloping paths. That is the first thing to think about with children.

Best area to stay in Munnar with children

Munnar is a district, not one town. Where you sleep decides how much of your day is spent in the car.

Near Munnar town: easy for shops and food

Town is practical if you need a pharmacy, warm clothes or a quick meal. It is also busier and louder. Traffic on the main road can be slow in peak months.

Chithirapuram and the tea-estate side: quieter hills

Properties in Chithirapuram sit above the valley and look over tea gardens. Evenings are quiet. You will drive to sights, but the drives are short. This side suits families who want views and calm.

Pallivasal and estate stays: space and nature

Pallivasal is just outside Munnar. Estate stays here are set in plantation land, with gardens, walks and more space for children to move. The trade-off is a slightly longer drive to town.

Munnar family stay: what to check in the room

How many people does the room sleep?

Most hill rooms sleep two or three. A family of four usually needs two rooms. Ask whether children count towards occupancy and whether an extra bed is available.

Is there heating?

Evenings can be cold, especially from December to February. A heater or warm blankets matter for small children. Ask before you arrive, not after.

How many steps lead to the room?

Hillside properties are built in tiers. A tiered layout looks beautiful but is hard with a pushchair or grandparents. Ask for the room closest to the reception and restaurant.

Is there a safe outdoor space?

A balcony is lovely, but check the railing height. A garden or lawn gives children somewhere to run. Hammocks and fire pits are fine, but ask about supervision.

Resort-by-resort notes

These notes come from the hotel pages on our site. We have kept to what could be confirmed.

Scenic, Munnar (IHCL SeleQtions), Chithirapuram

The hotel is built in tiers down a hillside, and most rooms open onto balconies facing the tea gardens. The Deluxe Room with Balcony sleeps three and measures about 300 sq ft. The Premium Room with Balcony also sleeps three, with twin beds and a larger balcony. Villas have private plunge pools. The hotel does not list a shared pool or a kids' club, so it works best for children who like views and walks more than splash time.

The restaurant serves Kerala meals and uses local cardamom and pepper. Plantation walks are arranged by the hotel. See the Scenic, Munnar hotel page for current categories.

Windermere Estate, Pallivasal

This is a family-run resort of 18 rooms on a working cardamom and coffee estate, just outside Munnar. The Garden Room and Planters' Room each sleep two. The page lists four places to eat, including a barbecue garden and a snack hut serving tea through the day. A guided afternoon walk through the cardamom fields to caves on the property is a good outing for curious children.

The page does not mention family rooms, a kids' menu or child policy, so ask directly. Families of four should request two rooms close together. See the Windermere Estate page for details.

Munnar hotels for families: a quick way to decide

  • Under five: choose few steps, heating and a restaurant close to the room.

  • Ages six to twelve: choose a balcony, plantation walks and an early start for Eravikulam.

  • Teenagers: choose an estate with trails and quiet evenings. They will use the walks.

  • With grandparents: choose the lowest-tier room, and confirm the walk from the car.

What a family day at a Munnar resort looks like

A good estate stay should fill a day without a long drive. Breakfast comes late, around 8:30 am, because the hills are cold early. A guided walk through a plantation fits the late morning, when the mist lifts and children have warmed up. Lunch is slow. Afternoons are for the garden, a nap or a short drive to a viewpoint. Tea arrives at 4:00 pm. By 6:30 pm it is dark and cool, so dinner is early and bedtimes are easy.

That rhythm is the real reason to choose a resort over a hotel in town. You are not travelling all day. You are living in the hills. Ask each property what the afternoon looks like for a seven-year-old. A clear answer is a good sign. A vague one is a warning.

What to pack for children

  • Warm layers for evenings, even outside winter

  • A light rain jacket, since showers come quickly

  • Shoes with grip for wet paths

  • Motion sickness medicine for the drive up

  • A small torch for unlit paths at night

Getting to a family resort in Munnar

Munnar is roughly 130 km from Kochi. Plan four to five hours with stops. The last stretch climbs through hairpin bends, so avoid heavy meals before the drive. Our Kochi to Munnar drive guide lists the best stops for children. If you are coming from the backwaters, see Alleppey to Munnar.

How many nights?

Two nights is the minimum. Three nights lets you add Top Station and a slow estate day. Our Munnar in two days plan shows how to use a short stay well.

Our advice

Choose the room first, the view second. A room that sleeps three and has heating makes a family trip easier than a villa you cannot reach with a pushchair. If your children are young, avoid the highest tier and ask for a ground-level room. If they are older, an estate stay gives them walks and space. Keep drive times short and plan nothing before 9:00 am on the first day. We plan Munnar around the road, not the other way round.
