Alleppey and Kumarakom are the two names every Kerala itinerary includes for the backwaters, and they are only about 30 km apart. They feel quite different, and picking the right one shapes the whole stay.

This guide compares them on what matters: the atmosphere, the boats, the stays and who each suits.

Alleppey

Alleppey is the town most people think of for the backwaters. It has the largest number of houseboats and the busiest canals, with boats of every kind. The town has restaurants, shops and a beach, and it is easy to reach from Kochi.

  • Best for: a first-time houseboat night, a short trip and travellers who like variety.

  • Trade-off: more boat traffic, and some routes feel crowded in December and January.

Kumarakom

Kumarakom sits on the east side of Vembanad Lake, and it is quieter. It is known for its lakeside resorts, many in old heritage homes or large gardens. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is nearby.

  • Best for: a restful stay, couples, honeymoons and birdwatchers.

  • Trade-off: fewer places to eat outside resorts, and less to do in the evenings.

Houseboats at each

Houseboats run from both places, and you can book either way. Cruises from Alleppey tend to use the narrow canals and busier channels. From Kumarakom you are more often on open lake water and quieter routes. See our houseboat guide and the price explainer.

Which should you choose?

  • One night, a first trip: Alleppey for the houseboat.

  • Two nights, a relaxed trip: Kumarakom for a resort, with a day cruise.

  • A longer stay: both. Spend a night on a houseboat at Alleppey and a night at a lakeside resort in Kumarakom.

For the lake itself, see the Vembanad Lake guide and the Kumarakom guide.
