Kerala in the Monsoon: Is June to September Worth It?
Kerala in the monsoon: what the weather is really like, the best places to go from June to September, Ayurveda season, what to avoid and how to save.

Kerala is where the Indian monsoon arrives first, usually in early June. Visitors often avoid it, but the season has a loyal following. The hills turn emerald, the waterfalls roar, hotels cut their rates and the pace of life slows.
This guide explains what the monsoon is really like, where to go and what to avoid.

Athirappilly Waterfalls in full flow.
Place | In the monsoon |
|---|---|
Munnar | Misty, green and cool, with some road delays |
Alleppey | Wet but peaceful; houseboats run when conditions allow |
Kochi and Fort Kochi | Showers, with sightseeing between them |
Thekkady | Lush; boat and trek schedules may change |
Beaches | Rough seas; swimming is not safe |
What the weather is like
The monsoon runs roughly from June to September, with a second, lighter rainy period in October and November. Rain often comes in heavy bursts, with dry hours between them. It is humid, and the sun can still appear.
What is good about it
Scenery: the hills and paddy fields are at their greenest.
Waterfalls: they are at their fullest. See the Athirappilly guide.
Prices: hotel and houseboat rates are well below the winter peak.
Quiet: the main sights are empty.
Ayurveda: the monsoon is traditionally considered the best season for treatments. See the Ayurveda guide.
What to be careful about
Rough seas: do not swim at Kovalam, Varkala or other beaches.
Landslides and floods: some hill roads can close in heavy rain. Allow extra time.
Schedules: boat rides, treks and some parks may be restricted.
Wet days: pack for rain, with quick-dry clothes and a light waterproof.
Where to go
Choose a hill stay in Munnar or Thekkady, or a backwater stay in a covered, comfortable villa. A resort with a good spa suits an Ayurveda retreat. See the Munnar stay guide and the houseboat guide.
What to skip
Skip the beaches, and keep your itinerary flexible. A rain-day plan, such as an Ayurveda session or a museum, saves the day.
Is it a good honeymoon season?
For quiet, privacy and value, yes, if you plan indoor options. If you want clear skies and beach time, choose winter. See the Kerala honeymoon guide.
