Most Kerala plans fail on the same point: the map is small and the roads are slow. A 100 km stretch can take four hours, and a day with two transfers is a day spent in the car.

This guide gives the real distances and drive times between the main stops, then shows how to use them to build a route that does not wear you out.

What the numbers tell you

Munnar is a half-day each way. The climb from Kochi is slow because the road is winding and busy with trucks. Plan for four and a half hours with a stop.

Thekkady is the awkward one. It sits away from the main coastal line, and reaching it from the backwaters or the coast is a four-hour drive. It is worth it only if you want the forest and the spice plantations.

Alleppey is central. From Alleppey, Kochi is close, Kumarakom is close and Varkala is a morning's drive. It is the natural pivot of a route.

The south coast is close together. Varkala, Trivandrum and Kovalam are within an hour or so of each other, which makes them easy to combine.

Route patterns that work

The classic loop (Kochi to Kochi)

Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kochi. About 450 km in total, with three long drives. It suits seven to eight days, and you can read the full plan in our Kerala 7-day itinerary.

The north-to-south line

Fly into Kochi, and out of Thiruvananthapuram. Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey, Varkala, Kovalam. It avoids the long return and saves about a half-day.

The short version

Kochi, Alleppey, Varkala. Three bases with short drives, and good for five days or a beach-led trip.

Practical notes

  • Private car: the most flexible way to move. A Kerala driver knows the hill road and the stops.

  • Trains: useful along the coast, such as Kochi to Trivandrum and Alleppey to Kochi. They do not reach Munnar or Thekkady.

  • Boats: the backwaters have ferries between towns, such as Alleppey to Kottayam, which can be scenic but are slow and not a route to depend on.

  • Rain: a heavy downpour can add an hour or more to the hill roads, and landslide alerts may close a stretch for a few hours.

If you are not sure which towns to include, our places to visit in Kerala field guide compares them, and the best time to visit Kerala helps with the season.
