Two days is enough to see Jaipur's main sights without rushing, if you group them by location. The city's best-known places sit in two clusters: the forts on the hills outside, and the old city within the pink walls.

This plan puts the hill forts on the first morning, when the light and the crowds are kindest, and keeps the old city for the second day.

Rooftop dinner or the Albert Hall at night

Day 1: the forts

Reach Amber Fort when it opens, before the tour buses. Walk up, or take a jeep if you prefer, and allow about two hours. On the way back, stop at the Jal Mahal for a photograph of the palace in the lake. See our Amber Fort guide.

Have a long lunch and a rest in the heat of the afternoon. In the late afternoon, go to Nahargarh for sunset. See the Nahargarh guide.

Day 2: the old city

Start at the City Palace, which opens in the morning, and then walk to Jantar Mantar next door. See the Jantar Mantar guide. The Hawa Mahal is a short walk, and its pink facade is best photographed in the morning light from the street opposite. See the Hawa Mahal guide.

After lunch, spend the afternoon in the bazaars. Johari Bazaar is for jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for textiles. See the markets guide.

For the evening, choose a rooftop dinner, or visit the Albert Hall museum after dark. See the Albert Hall guide.

Getting around

A car with a driver is the easiest way, because the forts are far from the old city. Autos and cabs work for the old city. Allow time for traffic, especially around the bazaars.

What to skip if you are tired

  • Jantar Mantar: skip it if you are not curious about astronomy.

  • Nahargarh: the sunset is lovely, but you can swap it for a quiet evening.

  • A second bazaar: one market is enough for most travellers.

What a longer stay adds

A third day lets you add a leopard safari, a day trip to Abhaneri or a cooking class. See the Jhalana safari guide and the Abhaneri guide.

When to go

October to March is the best season. In summer, do the forts at opening time and rest through the afternoon. See the Rajasthan season guide.
