Jaipur's old city is laid out as a grid of bazaars, and each one specialises in a trade. If you know what you want, you can shop in a few hours. If you do not, the markets are worth walking for their own sake.

This guide explains the main bazaars, what to buy in each and how to shop well.

Johari Bazaar

This is the jewellery street. Gold and silver shops line it, along with dealers in precious and semi-precious stones. Jaipur is a major centre of gem cutting, so it is worth looking even if you do not buy.

  • Buy: silver, kundan and meenakari pieces, and gemstones.

  • Tip: ask for a certificate for any stone, and compare two or three shops first.

Bapu Bazaar

A busy, colourful market for textiles and everyday souvenirs. It is known for block-printed cloth, embroidered bags, mojari shoes and tie-and-dye scarves.

  • Buy: jootis, printed cotton, dupattas and small gifts.

  • Tip: fixed-price shops exist, but many stalls expect bargaining.

Tripolia and Chandpole

Tripolia is the place for lac bangles, which are made in front of you, and for brass and iron utensils. Chandpole has marble carvers and stone craftsmen, and it is much calmer.

Kishanpol and block printing

For a closer look at block printing, visit Kishanpol Bazaar. The fabrics here are printed by hand with carved wooden blocks, and prices rise with the fineness of the work. Sanganer, outside the city, is the home of the craft.

How to shop

  1. Go in the morning or late afternoon, to avoid the midday heat.

  2. Bargain politely. Start at about half the first quote and settle in between.

  3. Check opening days. Many shops close on Sunday, and some markets close on a rotating weekday.

  4. Carry small cash. Cards are less common in the smaller shops.

  5. Insist on a receipt for expensive pieces and gems.

How it fits the day

The markets sit close to the Hawa Mahal and the City Palace, so you can shop after a morning of sights. See our Hawa Mahal guide, and for a late evening, the Albert Hall guide.
