Distances and times are guides. Check the road and the schedules before you go.

By road

A private car is the easiest choice. The road is mostly good, and you can stop where you like. Leave early, so you arrive in Jodhpur in daylight.

The best stops

  • Ranakpur: a large Jain temple with carved marble pillars. See our Ranakpur guide.

  • Kumbhalgarh: a fort with a very long wall on a hill. See our Kumbhalgarh guide.

You can do one or both. Doing both makes it a full day, so start early and skip other plans.

By train

Trains connect the region, but services and stations vary, and times can be longer than the road. Check the current timetable and book ahead. For most travellers a car with a driver is simpler and lets you see Ranakpur on the way.

How to choose

  • Short on time: drive directly.

  • Want scenery and culture: add Ranakpur.

  • Love forts: add Kumbhalgarh.

What comes next

Jodhpur has its own two-day plan. See the Jodhpur 2-day itinerary. For the route after, see the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer guide. For the other direction, see the Jaipur to Udaipur guide.

Practical tips

  1. Start by 8 am if you add stops.

  2. Carry water and snacks. Options are limited on some stretches.

  3. Dress modestly at the temple.

  4. Book the hotel for the evening you arrive, not the next.

  5. Ask your driver about current road conditions.
