Adding Ranthambore to the Golden Triangle gives the trip a wild side. After the monuments of Delhi and Agra, and before the palaces of Jaipur, you spend two days in one of India's best-known tiger reserves.

This guide shows how to fit it in, how much time to give it and what to expect.

Why add Ranthambore

Ranthambore combines tigers with an old hill fort, and the reserve is one of the better places in India to see a tiger in the wild. It is not guaranteed, and sightings depend on luck, season and the zone you are assigned. Give it at least two nights and three or four safaris.

Where it fits

The easiest slot is between Agra and Jaipur. The drive from Agra is long, but the Jaipur leg afterwards is short. Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri are on the other roads, so you choose between them. See our Agra to Jaipur guide.

Safari booking

Safaris run in the morning and the afternoon, and tickets are limited, with zones assigned on a quota system. Book well in advance, especially from November to March. See our Ranthambore guide for the details.

Best season

October to June. The cooler months are comfortable, but summer, from April to June, is often the best time to see tigers at waterholes, though it is hot. The reserve closes during the monsoon. See the Golden Triangle season guide and the Rajasthan season guide.

Practical tips

  1. Book safaris early, and ask for more than one.

  2. Wear neutral clothes and a warm layer for early mornings.

  3. Stay near the park, so you save time on the road.

  4. Keep expectations realistic. A good safari is more than a tiger sighting.

  5. Follow the guide's rules, and stay quiet in the vehicle.

The base itinerary

The classic trip without Ranthambore takes five days. See the Golden Triangle 5-day itinerary. For other extensions, see the Rajasthan extension guide.
