Agra to Jaipur: Distance, Time and the Stops Worth Making
Agra to Jaipur by road: distance, realistic drive time, the stops that earn their place (Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri, Bharatpur) and how to plan the transfer.

Agra to Jaipur is the second long transfer of the Golden Triangle, and it is the one that decides whether the trip feels easy. It is about five hours of driving. With the right stops it becomes the most interesting day of the circuit.
This guide gives the distance and the time, then explains which stops are worth making and which to skip.

The route and the time
The road from Agra heads west, passing Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur, then turns through Dausa to reach Jaipur. It is a national highway with a mixture of fast stretches and slower, busier ones.
Distance: about 235 to 250 km.
Time: four and a half to five and a half hours of pure driving. The final approach to Jaipur can be slow.
With stops: plan for seven to eight hours total.
Departure: leave by 8 am if you plan to stop, and arrive in Jaipur by late afternoon.
There are no frequent direct rail services of the quality of the Delhi to Agra route, so the usual choice for visitors is a private car.
Stops worth making
Fatehpur Sikri
About 40 km from Agra, close to the start of the drive. The abandoned Mughal capital is the highlight of the day, with a palace complex, a large mosque and a tomb. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Our Fatehpur Sikri guide covers the order and the touts to avoid.
Abhaneri (Chand Baori)
About 90 km before Jaipur, well placed for a late-morning stop. The Chand Baori stepwell is a deep, geometric well with thousands of steps on three sides, and it is one of the finest in India. Allow about an hour. See the Abhaneri day trip guide for the details.

Steps on three sides, the pavilion on the fourth.
Bharatpur (optional)
Bharatpur has the Keoladeo bird sanctuary and a small fort. It is a good stop in the winter months if you care about birds, and a poor one if you do not. It adds at least two hours.
What to skip
The roadside restaurants along the highway vary widely, and some are set up for large coaches. Eat a light lunch in Jaipur, or choose a clean place in Fatehpur Sikri or near Abhaneri.
A sample day

8:00 am | Leave Agra |
9:00 am | Fatehpur Sikri (1.5 to 2 hours) |
11:30 am | Continue towards Bharatpur and Dausa |

This keeps the drive in manageable pieces, and arrives in time for a sunset at a hotel or at Nahargarh. The Nahargarh sunset guide can guide the evening.
Practical notes
Fog: in December and January, early-morning fog can slow the road. Leave a margin.
Heat: in April to June, the stops are hot. Go early and carry water.
Fuel and toilets: use the established rest stops, and plan the breaks.
Money: keep small notes for entry tickets and tips.
Driver: a driver familiar with the route saves time on the Fatehpur Sikri parking and the Dausa bypass.
