One day is enough to see Agra's essentials if you start early and order the sights well. The Taj Mahal comes first, in the soft early light. The fort and the Baby Taj follow, and the day ends with a view of the Taj from across the river.

This plan is built for a single day, whether you are staying in Agra or coming from Delhi or Jaipur.

Time

Plan

Sunrise

Taj Mahal, about 2 hours

Mid-morning

Breakfast and a rest

Late morning

Agra Fort, 1.5 to 2 hours

Afternoon

Lunch, then Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)

Late afternoon

Mehtab Bagh for the Taj at sunset

Check opening hours before you go. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Taj Mahal at sunrise

Arrive at the gate before opening to avoid the queue and the heat. See our Taj Mahal guide for tickets, gates and what to see, and the sunrise or sunset guide. Allow about two hours.

Agra Fort

After breakfast, go to the fort. The red sandstone walls hold palaces, audience halls and a view of the Taj from the Musamman Burj. Allow up to two hours. See the Agra Fort guide.

Lunch and rest

Agra gets hot at midday. Have lunch, and rest. For ideas, see the Agra food guide.

Baby Taj

In the afternoon, visit the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, a quiet, finely inlaid building across the river. See the Baby Taj guide.

Sunset at Mehtab Bagh

End the day at Mehtab Bagh, a garden on the opposite bank, with a view of the Taj Mahal across the river. See our Agra beyond the Taj guide.

If you have less time

Skip the Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh, and see the Taj and the fort. If you are coming from Delhi, leave very early. See the Delhi to Agra guide.

If you have more time

A second day lets you add Sikandra, Fatehpur Sikri and a food walk. See the Sikandra guide and the Fatehpur Sikri guide.
