Delhi to Agra: By Car, Train or Private Driver, and What to Stop For
Delhi to Agra: distance, drive time on the Yamuna Expressway, the fast train options, whether to hire a private driver and which stops are worth making.

Delhi to Agra is the best-known road in Indian travel, and it is shorter than its reputation. Done well it is a comfortable morning drive. Done badly it is a hot, tiring day.
The choice is between a car on the Yamuna Expressway and a fast train. This guide compares them with real timings, then covers stops and what to avoid.

The Yamuna Expressway between Delhi and Agra.
At a glance | |
|---|---|
Distance by road | About 200 to 230 km, depending on the start point |
Drive time | 3 to 4 hours on the expressway |
Fast train | About 1.75 to 2 hours, New Delhi to Agra Cantt |
Best option | Private car with driver, or a morning express train |
Best stops | Mathura and Vrindavan, or none, if you want to arrive early |
By car on the Yamuna Expressway
The expressway runs from Greater Noida to near Agra, and it is the normal route. It is a toll road with wide lanes and few junctions, and for long stretches it is quick and uneventful.
Distance: about 165 km on the expressway itself, and 200 to 230 km door to door from central Delhi.
Time: three to four hours. The slowest section is getting out of Delhi and through Noida at rush hour.
Cost: a private car with driver is the standard for visitors, and tolls are included in a hired car's cost.
Best departure: before 7 am to avoid the Delhi morning traffic.
The road is smooth, but dense fog in December and January can slow it and occasionally close it for part of the morning. Build in margin if you have a same-day flight or train.
By train
Several fast trains run between New Delhi and Agra Cantt, and they are the quickest and most predictable option.
Fastest trains: the Gatimaan Express and the Shatabdi services take about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours.
Booking: reserve in advance, since the best trains fill up, and carry ID.
At Agra: the Cantt station is a short drive from the Taj Mahal and most hotels.
Timing: morning departures give you a full day in Agra. Check which day the Taj is closed, which is Friday.
Train schedules and numbers change. Check the current timetable and book through the official railway channels or a trusted planner.
Car or train?
Private car | Train | |
|---|---|---|
Time | 3 to 4 hours | About 2 hours |
Comfort | Door to door, flexible | Comfortable in executive classes |
Stops | Possible | Not possible |
Luggage | Easy | Handled by you |
Best for | Families, groups, stops | Solo, short on time |
For visitors with luggage or a group, a car is easier. If you only want to get to Agra fast and then continue by car, the train saves about two hours.
Stops worth making
The route has a few real options, and you should choose one, not all.
Mathura and Vrindavan. About halfway, with the temples of Krishna's birthplace. It takes a half-day. See our Vrindavan and Mathura day trip guide.
A food stop. The expressway has restaurants and rest areas of mixed quality. Pick a clean one.
No stop. Reaching Agra by late morning leaves time for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort the same day.
Fatehpur Sikri lies on the other side of Agra, on the road to Jaipur, so it is not a Delhi to Agra stop. See the Fatehpur Sikri guide.
What to plan once you arrive
Agra needs a day and a half to do properly.
Keep the Taj Mahal for sunrise on the second morning if you can, and read the sunrise or sunset guide to pick the slot.
Visit Agra Fort on the first afternoon.
See Agra beyond the Taj for the second half-day.
Our how many days for the Golden Triangle guide shows how this leg fits the full circuit, and the first-timer's Golden Triangle journey plans the transfers for you.
