The most romantic things to do in Andaman are about light, water and time alone. Watch the sun set into the sea at Radhanagar. Be the only people on Kalapathar at sunrise. Snorkel over a reef together. Cycle round Neil Island. Then eat dinner with your feet near the sand.

Most guides to the Andamans list beaches. This one covers what to do with a day, not just where to stand. It suits honeymooners, anniversary trips and any couple who wants a slow week on the islands. For the beaches themselves, read our guide to the most romantic beaches in the Andamans. For the route, see the Andaman honeymoon planning guide.

Havelock: the classic romantic island

1. Sunset at Radhanagar

Radhanagar is a long curve of white sand, backed by forest, with calm turquoise water. The sun sets straight into the sea. Go about an hour before sunset, when the light is golden and the crowds thin. Walk to the far end for more privacy. Swim with care, since lifeguards cover only part of the beach. See our Radhanagar guide.

2. Sunrise at Kalapathar

Kalapathar is smaller and quieter, with dark rocks against white sand. It faces east, so it is the better beach for sunrise. Bring a flask of tea, because few stalls open early. Our Kalapathar guide has the details.

3. Snorkelling together

The reefs off Havelock and Neil are the reason many couples come. Snorkelling is gentle, and you share the water without needing skill. Boat trips to the reef leave in the morning, and sea conditions decide whether they run. Our Andaman water sports guide explains the options and the season.

4. A first dive for two

If you want something to remember, book an introductory dive. A trained instructor stays with you, and you do not need experience. Go with a licensed operator and follow every safety briefing. It is a shared adventure, and it suits couples who enjoy doing things together.

5. A beachside candlelight dinner

A private table on the sand is the Andaman classic. Choose a resort that sets it up properly, and ask about the menu, the weather plan and the cost in advance. Our candlelight dinner guide explains which beaches and resorts do it best.

Neil Island: the slow day

6. Cycle or scooter round the island

Neil is small and flat, and you can cover it in a morning. Hire a bicycle and pedal between the beaches. There are few cars and nobody is in a hurry. It is the most relaxed day of the trip.

7. The Natural Bridge at low tide

The Natural Bridge is a rock arch carved by waves and coral. It is best at low tide, when you can walk across the exposed rock and look into the tide pools. Wear shoes with grip. The formation is eroding, so ask your hotel whether the arch is intact before you plan around it.

8. Sunset at Laxmanpur

Laxmanpur faces west and is the island's sunset beach. Arrive about 45 minutes before the sun goes down and walk the shore. See the Laxmanpur guide.

9. A glass-bottom boat at Bharatpur

Bharatpur has shallow, calm water and clear views of the reef. A glass-bottom boat lets you see the coral without getting wet. It is the easiest way to enjoy the sea together. See our Bharatpur guide.

10. Sunrise at Sitapur

Sitapur faces east and is almost empty at dawn. Take a flask of tea and be there before first light. It is the quietest start to a day you will find in the islands.

Rest and a calm night in Port Blair

11. A spa afternoon

After two days of sun and sea, a spa afternoon is a welcome change. Many resorts have couples' treatment rooms. Ask what is available and book ahead in winter.

12. Sunset on the south coast

If you spend a night in Port Blair, the shoreline at Chidiya Tapu, south of the town, is a calm place for sunset. It is quieter than Havelock and works well on a day when ferries or weather change your plans.

A romantic five-day plan

Here is how we would combine the ideas without rushing.

Day

Plan

1

Arrive in Port Blair. Rest, then a calm sunset on the south coast.

2

Ferry to Havelock in the morning. Sunset at Radhanagar and dinner at the resort.

3

Sunrise at Kalapathar, then a snorkelling trip. A spa afternoon. A candlelight dinner.

4

Morning ferry to Neil. Cycle the island, see the Natural Bridge at low tide, then sunset at Laxmanpur.

5

Sunrise at Sitapur, then return to Port Blair for the flight home.

The plan leaves the afternoons open on purpose. Ferry times and tides decide the real schedule, so keep a spare half-day if you can. For a longer route, see the 6-day Andaman itinerary.

Where to stay

For a couple, the right stay is the one with the beach in front of it. Taj Exotica Resort and Spa on Havelock sits beside Radhanagar, so sunset needs no transfer. Choose a beachside stay on Havelock for the first nights, then use Neil for a quiet day or an overnight. Our guide to where to stay in the Andamans helps you choose, and the Havelock or Neil guide compares the two.

Getting between the islands

Ferries run between Port Blair, Havelock and Neil. The Havelock to Neil crossing takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Book 7 to 10 days ahead in peak season, and choose a morning sailing so you arrive with a full day. Our Andaman ferry guide explains the operators and the booking.

Best time to go

November to April has the calmest seas, which is when snorkelling, diving and boat trips run most reliably. From May to September the monsoon can cancel ferries and limit water sports, so honeymooners who want beach time usually avoid it. Read our best time to visit Andaman guide for the month-by-month view, and the monsoon guide if your dates are fixed.
