The Andaman monsoon brings heavy rain, rough seas and a very different islands trip. Fewer visitors come, rates fall sharply and the forests are intensely green. It can be a good season for the right traveller and a poor one for the wrong one.

This guide explains what changes, what stays open and who should avoid it.

What the weather is like

The southwest monsoon usually arrives in late May or early June and runs to September, with some rain through October. Rain can be heavy, with grey skies and strong winds. Seas are rough, and storms can disrupt flights and ferries.

What is limited

  • Ferries: sailings can be cancelled at short notice. This is the main risk.

  • Water sports: snorkelling, diving and boat trips are often suspended.

  • Beach swimming: currents are strong. Follow the red flags and local advice.

  • Some islands and parks: can close in rough weather. See the marine park guide.

What can still be good

  • Quiet: beaches and sights are almost empty.

  • Prices: hotels and packages cost well below the peak. Ask for the current rates.

  • Scenery: the forests are very green, and the light is dramatic.

  • Indoor and town sights: the Cellular Jail, museums and local markets work in any weather. See the Port Blair half-day guide.

Who should go

  • Travellers who like quiet, do not mind rain and have flexible dates.

  • People on a tight budget who accept the limits.

Who should avoid it

  • Honeymooners who want beach time and clear skies.

  • Anyone who wants to dive or snorkel.

  • Anyone with a fixed flight home, since cancelled ferries can leave you stranded.

If you do go

  1. Stay near the airport or in Port Blair, where you can reach the airport even if ferries stop.

  2. Keep flexible plans and extra days.

  3. Buy cancellation cover if you can.

  4. Choose a resort with a pool and a spa.

The better window

The season from October to May has calm seas and clear water. See our best time guide and the week-long itinerary.
