Rajasthan Trip for Couples: Romantic Stays and Sunset Spots
A Rajasthan trip for couples: which cities to choose, romantic palace and haveli stays, and the best sunset spots in Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur.

A Rajasthan trip for couples works when you choose fewer places and better stays. The state is large, the drives are long, and the famous sights are busy. But it also has lakeside palaces, desert camps and hilltop forts, and two people with the right plan can find real quiet in all of them.
This guide helps you choose cities, stays and sunset spots for a romantic trip. It is not a day-by-day itinerary. For that, use our Rajasthan honeymoon itinerary for 8 days. For a wider overview, see the places to visit in Rajasthan guide.
The idea is simple. Pick two or three bases, give each at least two nights, and plan one sunset a day.
Which cities suit couples
City | Why couples like it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
Udaipur | Lakes, palaces and slow evenings | The most romantic, and the busiest in peak season |
Jodhpur | A blue old city under a huge fort | More atmosphere than polish. Good for rooftop dinners |
Jaisalmer | A golden fort and the desert | Remote. Needs a night at a desert camp or a stay near the dunes |
Jaipur | Palaces, markets and food | Busy and loud. Better as a short stop than a base |
If you can only choose two, choose Udaipur and Jaisalmer. They feel different from each other, and that contrast is the point of the trip.
Sunset spots, city by city
Sunset is the best hour in Rajasthan. The air cools, the stone turns gold, and the crowds thin. Here is where we would go.
City | Spot | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Udaipur | A boat on Lake Pichola | The City Palace glows across the water |
Udaipur | Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace | A hilltop palace with wide views. Check closing time |
Jodhpur | The walls of Mehrangarh Fort | The blue city spreads out below. Confirm hours |
Jaisalmer | Sam sand dunes | The classic desert sunset, about 40 to 45 km from town |
Jaipur | Nahargarh Fort | A hilltop viewpoint over the Pink City |
Udaipur: the lake or the hill
You cannot do both on the same evening. A boat on Lake Pichola gives you the palaces reflected in the water. Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace, gives you a hilltop panorama. Sources give entry as about ₹110 for Indian visitors and ₹300 for foreign visitors, but the closing time varies from about 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm. In December and January, sunset can fall after closing, so you may have to leave before the sun drops. If you have one sunset in Udaipur, we would choose the boat.

Jodhpur: the fort walls and the old city
Mehrangarh stands over the blue old city, and its walls give wide views in the late afternoon. Opening hours and fees change, so confirm them before you go. After the fort, dinner on a rooftop in the old town is a simple pleasure. Choose a place with a clear view of the fort lit at night, and book ahead in peak months. Jodhpur is less polished than Udaipur, and many couples find that more interesting, not less.
Jaisalmer: the dunes
Sam is the best-known dune field, about 40 to 45 km from Jaisalmer. It gets crowded in the late afternoon, when day visitors arrive by jeep. Couples do better by staying at a camp and going out at the edge of the day. Our Sam Sand Dunes guide explains when the dunes are quietest.

Jaipur: Nahargarh
Nahargarh was built in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II and sits on the Aravalli ridge above Jaipur. It is a popular sunset viewpoint, and it is busy. Entry fees and hours differ between sources, so check them locally. Go with a driver, because the road is steep, and plan the descent in the dark.
Romantic stays by city
A stay matters more than a sight in Rajasthan. You will spend a lot of time in it.
Udaipur: Taj Lake Palace sits on an island in Lake Pichola, which gives it a setting unlike any other in the city. Jagat Niwas Palace is a 17th-century haveli hotel on the Lal Ghat waterfront, more intimate and closer to the old town.
Jaisalmer: Suryagarh is built in carved sandstone in the style of a fort, set outside town. Fort Rajwada is also built in golden sandstone, with a pool and terraces.
Choose by mood. A palace on the water is grand and formal. A haveli is smaller and closer to the streets. A desert property is about space and silence.
Routes that work for couples
Route | Nights | Best for |
|---|---|---|
Udaipur and Jaisalmer | 6 to 7 | Contrast, with a long transfer in the middle |
Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer | 7 to 8 | A classic west Rajasthan loop |
Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur | 7 | Palaces and lakes, with less desert |
Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur | 7 to 8 | A first trip combined with the Golden Triangle |
Drives between cities are long, often five hours or more, and are approximate. Jaipur to Udaipur and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer are each a full morning. Plan a late lunch and a short afternoon, and avoid stacking a long drive with an activity. For a longer circuit, see the 10-day Rajasthan itinerary.
Best time to go
Months | What to expect | What couples should know |
|---|---|---|
October to March | Cool, dry, clear | The best season, and the busiest |
December and January | Cold nights, especially in the desert | Pack warm layers for camps |
April to June | Very hot | Palaces and pools only |
July to September | Monsoon, green hills around Udaipur | Fewer visitors, humid |
October to March is the sensible window. Peak weeks, particularly around Christmas, New Year and the wedding season, book out early, so reserve stays well ahead.
What is not romantic
Long road transfers between cities
Crowds at the City Palace, Amber Fort and Jaisalmer Fort at midday
Dust, heat and noise in the old cities
Touts and tight schedules at the major monuments
Be honest about these, and plan around them. Put the busy sights in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and go out again at sunset.
Our advice
Keep it to two or three bases. Udaipur is the heart of a romantic trip, and the desert is the contrast that makes it memorable. Spend at least two nights in each, avoid back-to-back long drives, and choose a stay with a view or a quiet courtyard. Add one private experience, such as a boat or a dune dinner, and keep the rest of the evening free.
Hotels and camps may arrange extras such as a private dinner or flowers, but ask in advance and do not assume. We plan each route around the drive times, the best sunset and the stay, so you spend your time in the places, not on the road.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best city in Rajasthan for couples?
Udaipur is the usual choice, thanks to its lakes and palaces. Jaisalmer is the best for a desert night. Jodhpur offers a quieter, more local atmosphere.
How many days do couples need for Rajasthan?
Seven to eight days works well for two or three cities. Five days is possible for one or two, but the drives will feel long.
What is the best month for a Rajasthan trip for couples?
November to February is the most comfortable. It is also the busiest. Desert nights in December and January are cold.
Where can couples watch sunset in Rajasthan?
On Lake Pichola in Udaipur, at Sam dunes near Jaisalmer, and from forts such as Nahargarh in Jaipur and Mehrangarh in Jodhpur.
Is Rajasthan romantic or too busy?
It can be both. The famous monuments are busy, but with early starts, good stays and a few quiet evenings, it is very romantic.
Should couples stay in a palace or a smaller hotel?
A palace gives you grandeur and a setting. A smaller haveli or boutique stay gives you privacy and a closer feel for the city. Many couples do one of each on a longer trip.
