What to expect
The dunes at Sam are real, wide and impressive in the evening light. They are also busy. On a peak winter evening, you will share them with many visitors and with camel and jeep operators.
If you want a quiet dune, ask your camp whether it can take you to a less visited area, such as Khuri or a private stretch of sand.
Camel safari
A camel ride is the traditional way to cross the dunes. Most rides are short, from 30 minutes to an hour, and finish at a dune for sunset. Longer rides are available from some camps.
Cost: set by the operator, and often bundled with a camp.
Comfort: camels are slow and the saddle is hard. Wear long trousers.
Animal welfare: choose operators who treat their animals well and who do not overload them.
Jeep dune bashing
Jeep rides over the dunes are fast and bumpy, and popular with younger travellers. They are noisy and can disturb the quiet of the dunes. Ask for a short ride if you prefer to keep the evening calm.
Desert camps
Most visitors stay one night at a camp near Sam. A typical evening includes the camel ride, sunset on the dunes, a folk music and dance programme, a dinner and a night in a tent.
Basic camps: simple tents with shared facilities.
Luxury camps: larger tents with attached bathrooms, better food and quieter locations.
Book ahead: camps fill from December to February.
For a luxury trip, choose the camp carefully. The camp's position matters as much as the tent.

Best time to go
October to March is the season. The nights are cool and the days pleasant. In summer the heat is severe, and dune visits are not advisable at midday. During the monsoon the area is quiet.
