Overview

Jaisalmer At A Glance

Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert in yellow sandstone. A luxury Jaisalmer tour begins at the fort, which Rawal Jaisal founded in 1156. It stands on Trikuta Hill and turns gold as the light drops. About a quarter of the old city's residents still live inside its walls. You pass homes, shops and Jain temples, all cut from the same pale stone. Your private guide reads the carving with you, doorway by doorway. Below the fort, the old merchant havelis show what desert trade once paid for. Patwon ki Haveli is a well-known example. Stone lattice covers its balconies and windows. Gadisar Lake sits on the edge of town. Rawal Gadsi Singh had it dug in 1367 to hold rainwater. Sandstone shrines and steps line its banks, and it makes a calm start to a morning. Then comes the desert. The Sam dunes lie a drive out from the city. A camel ride at sunset is the classic way in. If the pace suits you, stay on for a night under canvas. UNESCO inscribed the fort in 2013 as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. We build each day around your rhythm. Unhurried mornings, long lunches, and time to simply sit and look.

Best Time
October to March. Days are pleasant for walking the fort and nights are cool for time in the dunes; summer heat is intense.
Getting There

Suryagarh Jaisalmer

★★★★★

Suryagarh rises from the desert like a fortress reborn. Built from local golden sandstone, it stands on the Sam road outside Jaisalmer city, facing the dunes of the Thar Desert. The design draws on Rajasthan's fort architecture. Turrets, jharokhas, and courtyards recall the region's royal past. This is a heritage hotel in spirit, not merely in name. Suryagarh is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. That membership signals a level of service and design refined for discerning travellers. Inside, the property blends traditional Rajasthani craftsmanship with contemporary comfort. Guests can unwind at the spa or swim in the indoor pool. A fitness centre and sauna round out the wellness offering. The restaurant serves a buffet of local and international dishes. A coffee shop, concierge desk, and 24-hour room service support a smooth stay. Suryagarh sits close enough to Jaisalmer city for day trips to the fort and old town. Yet it feels worlds away. Evenings here bring desert stillness and starlit skies. For travellers seeking Jaisalmer's grandeur with real comfort, Suryagarh delivers both.

Fort Rajwada

★★★★

Fort Rajwada was built in the late 1990s, but not in a modern idiom. The design came from a team that included the architects who worked on Jaisalmer's own restoration projects, and the building follows classical Rajasthani proportion closely enough that first-time visitors often mistake its age. It stands on the Jodhpur-Barmer link road, a short drive outside the walled city. That distance is an advantage. Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort with narrow, crowded lanes, and stepping back from it at the end of the day is welcome. The interior is built around a large central atrium in golden Jaisalmer sandstone. Carved brackets, jharokha balconies and stone screens run through the public areas. Corridors are wide and cool, which matters in a desert town. Rooms are generous and traditionally furnished, with arched alcoves and carved headboards. The Royal Palace and Terrace categories add more space and better outlooks. Bathrooms are conventional and well kept rather than designed. There is a large outdoor pool, an Ayurvedic spa and a multi-cuisine restaurant that does a reliable Rajasthani thali. Staff arrange desert safaris to the Sam and Khuri dunes, and the fort, Patwon Ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake are all ten minutes away.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Jaisalmer

How many days do you need in Jaisalmer?

Two nights works well. One day covers the fort, the havelis and Gadisar Lake. A second lets you head out to the Sam dunes for sunset and, if you like, a night in a desert camp. Add a third night if you want slower mornings or a longer desert outing. Your guide can set the pace.

What should I know before visiting Jaisalmer?

Wear comfortable shoes with grip. The fort's lanes are cobbled and uneven. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water, as the sun is strong even in cooler months. Dress modestly at Jain and Hindu temples and remove shoes where asked. Ask before photographing residents, since people live and work inside the fort. Your guide will brief you on the day.

When is the best time of day to visit Jaisalmer Fort?

Early morning is calm, with softer light and fewer tour groups in the lanes. Late afternoon suits photography, when the sandstone takes on its golden colour. Midday is hot and bright. Many guests do the fort in the morning and save the ramparts or a rooftop view for the last hour of daylight. Check current timings with your guide.

Do I have to stay overnight in the desert?

No. You can ride out to the Sam dunes for sunset and return to Jaisalmer the same evening. An overnight camp is an option if you want the night sky and a quiet morning in the dunes. We plan it around how you like to travel. Tell us your preference and we will shape the route.

Are your tours in Jaisalmer private?

Yes. Every journey is private. You travel with your own guide and driver, and the pace is yours to set.
