Overview

Vadodara At A Glance

Vadodara, Gujarat, is the old Gaekwad capital, still called Baroda by many. It is a graceful, unhurried city of palaces, museums and lakes. It also makes the best base for two very different day trips. Laxmi Vilas Palace is the centrepiece. It was built in the Indo-Saracenic style for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, and finished in 1890. Its towers and arches are grand, but the setting feels calm. Nearby Nyay Mandir and the museum quarter reward a slow afternoon. Champaner-Pavagadh lies about 50 km away. This UNESCO site holds fifteenth-century mosques, gateways and stepped hill trails. It is the most complete Sultanate-era town in the state. The Statue of Unity stands about 90 km from the city. At 182 metres, it is the tallest statue in the world. Vadodara also has an airport and good rail links. It fits easily between Ahmedabad and the coast, and it is a relaxed place to unwind between longer drives.
