Sasan Gir, Gujarat, is the doorway to the only wild home of the Asiatic lion. The lions live in dry deciduous forest across the Gir landscape. Few wildlife encounters in India feel this quiet or this close. The forest is a mix of teak, acacia and open grassland. Leopards, sambar deer and marsh crocodiles share it. Birdlife is rich too. Safaris run in open jeeps with a forest guide. Mornings are cool and quiet, and the light is soft. The park closes to visitors from about 16 June to 15 October each year. Safaris need advance permits. Routes are assigned by the forest department, so no operator can promise a route. We book early and plan for more than one drive. Sasan Gir also connects easily to Somnath, on the coast. Together they make a calm end to a Gujarat circuit. Winter and early summer are the usual choices for sightings.

Some Forest Villas add a private plunge pool. Each has a pocket-spring bed, a smart TV and a minibar. Stone walls and wide lawns set the mood. Glass walls open the lobby to the fields. The pool sits among the villas. Dine in the all-day restaurant or on the terrace. Try the evening high tea at sunset. Yoga and a gym are on site. Your guide books the dawn safari and briefs you the night before. Return for a slow lunch and a quiet afternoon. It is the most polished base in Gir.

This is a small eco-lodge on the edge of the Gir forest. It sits between two wooded hills. There are 16 cottages. Each is a Deluxe AC Cottage of 350 square feet. A king bed and a couch fill the room. A veranda with safari chairs faces the lawn. Walls are warm and wood-toned. Bathrooms are modern and en suite. The lodge has a swimming pool. Flavours of Forest serves the meals. Cafe Forest sits by the jungle with a small library. Nights end round a campfire. Days start with a jeep safari. Walks, birdwatching and tribal village visits fill the gaps. The lodge is certified by IATO and the Ecotourism Society of India. Choose it for a quieter, greener stay.
