Patan, Gujarat, is home to Rani ki Vav, a UNESCO-listed stepwell. It is a small town with one enormous idea. Queen Udayamati built the vav in the eleventh century, in memory of her husband Bhima I. The stepwell descends in seven levels. It is carved with hundreds of sculptures, many of Vishnu and his avatars. It feels less like a well than an inverted temple. Morning light reaches the lower galleries best. Modhera Sun Temple lies a short drive away, in Mehsana district. Bhima I built it in 1026 to 1027. Its carved hall, shrine and stepped tank make one of India's finest Solanki-era sites. Patan is also known for its double-ikat patola silk. Patan works as a day-visit hub, with no hotel of our standard in town. We pair it with Ahmedabad, roughly two to three hours by road, and time each stop for soft light.
