There are 246 rooms and suites, laid out like small villages of terracotta roofs and arched bridges. Rooms overlook the gardens, the lagoons or the sea, and many have a balcony or balcao. Six signature restaurants cover Goan, Italian and Indian kitchens. Kaya Kalp, The Royal Spa, spreads across 3,344 sq m. The pool sits under tall palms, and the beach is a short walk away. Arossim is quiet and wide, well south of the busy strip. We place families and longer stays here. It is the classic South Goa resort, with plenty of space and reliably good food.

Taj Exotica spreads across 56 acres on Goa's south-west coast. Palms, lawns and lagoons run down to Benaulim beach. The beachfront stretches for 800 metres of pale sand. You check in under a sunlit atrium. Then you choose between rooms in the main building and villas set among the gardens. The Premium Villa Rooms are part of four-room villas with vibrant interiors. Every Exotica room measures 56 sq m. There are three restaurants and two bars. J Wellness Circle offers Indian and international therapies. The pool has just been renovated. This is South Goa at its most relaxed. The beach is wide and quiet. Days move slowly here. We place guests at Exotica when they want space, sand and privacy, well away from the North Goa crowds.
