Benaulim, Goa

ITC Grand Goa Resort & Spa

★★★★★

ITC Grand Goa is a Portuguese-inspired resort on Arossim Beach in South Goa. It covers 45 acres of gardens, lagoons and lawns. There are 246 rooms and suites, laid out like small villages of terracotta roofs and arched bridges. Rooms overlook the gardens, the lagoons or the sea, and many have a balcony or balcao. Six signature restaurants cover Goan, Italian and Indian kitchens. Kaya Kalp, The Royal Spa, spreads across 3,344 sq m. The pool sits under tall palms, and the beach is a short walk away. Arossim is quiet and wide, well south of the busy strip. We place families and longer stays here. It is the classic South Goa resort, with plenty of space and reliably good food.

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa

★★★★★

Taj Exotica spreads across 56 acres on Goa's south-west coast. Palms, lawns and lagoons run down to Benaulim beach. The beachfront stretches for 800 metres of pale sand. You check in under a sunlit atrium. Then you choose between rooms in the main building and villas set among the gardens. The Premium Villa Rooms are part of four-room villas with vibrant interiors. Every Exotica room measures 56 sq m. There are three restaurants and two bars. J Wellness Circle offers Indian and international therapies. The pool has just been renovated. This is South Goa at its most relaxed. The beach is wide and quiet. Days move slowly here. We place guests at Exotica when they want space, sand and privacy, well away from the North Goa crowds.

Aerial view of Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa on its headland above Sinquerim beach

Candolim, Goa

Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa, Goa

★★★★★

Taj Fort Aguada sits on a green headland above Sinquerim beach. The 16th-century Fort Aguada rises just beside it. The resort is Portuguese in style, with terracotta roofs, white verandas and manicured lawns. Guests have direct access to the sand and open views of the Arabian Sea. Stay in a sea-facing room in the main wing, or book a cottage set in the gardens. The Hermitage Villas offer more space and privacy. There are four restaurants and a bar. J Wellness Circle runs Indian and international therapies. The outdoor pool looks out to the water. Taj calls this Goa's first luxury resort, and it has hosted royals and dignitaries for decades. The pace here is unhurried. Mornings suit a beach walk toward the fort. Evenings suit a long dinner by the sea. We place guests here when they want classic Goa with real history.

Candolim, Goa

Taj Holiday Village Resort & Spa, Goa

★★★★★

Taj Holiday Village feels like a Goan village of its own. It covers 28 acres beside Sinquerim beach. The architecture is Indo-Portuguese, with Romanesque arches, pillared verandas and sunny central courtyards. There are 142 terracotta-roof rooms and villas. Eight banyan trees shade the grounds, and the oldest is about 350 years old. Choose a garden balcony room or a standalone Goan villa with sea views. The resort has three restaurants and three bars, including a deck restaurant facing the beach. J Wellness Circle offers Indian therapies. The pool sits under tall palms. It is a relaxed, low-rise stay. We place families and longer-stay guests here. It is quieter than the busy strip further north, and the beach is steps away.

Palolem, Goa

Gateway Goa, Palolem

★★★★★

Gateway Goa sits on a hill above Palolem, in Canacona. It looks over the Sahyadri mountains on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. From the upper floors you can see Rajbag, Patnem and Colomb beaches all at once. The hotel has 156 rooms and 4 suites. Most have a balcony or terrace. The rooftop restaurant, 74 degrees NE, is the only bistro of its kind in South Goa. There is a pool, a fitness centre and a spa. A scheduled shuttle runs to Palolem, Patnem and Rajbag beaches. This is Goa at its quietest. Beaches here are wide, calm and uncrowded. We place guests in Palolem when they want the south coast at a slow pace, with modern comfort as a base.

Goa Marriott Resort & Spa along Miramar Beach with palms and the Mandovi estuary

Panaji, Goa

Goa Marriott Resort & Spa

★★★★★

Goa Marriott sits on Miramar Beach, a short drive from Panaji's old quarter. The Mandovi estuary meets the Arabian Sea right here. Palms line the sand. Rooms and suites look over the garden, the bay or the water, and most have a balcony. Choose a bay-view room for sunsets. There are several restaurants and bars, including a waterfront terrace and a swim-up pool bar. Quan Spa & Salon offers massage and body treatments. The resort has two outdoor pools and a fitness centre. It is a polished, easy base for Goa's capital. Fontainhas, Old Goa's churches and the river cruises all sit close by. We place guests here when they want a resort stay with city access, rather than a long beach transfer each day.

Taj Cidade de Goa Heritage

Taj Cidade de Goa Heritage looks like a Portuguese hamlet. It spreads over 30 green acres on Vainguinim Beach, at Dona Paula. Orange, yellow and blue walls set off the lawns. Inside you find alcoves, overhanging balcaos, chequered floors and local murals. Rooms are Portuguese-inspired, with sea views from many. Four restaurants and two bars serve Goan and global menus. J Wellness Circle runs the spa. There is an outdoor pool by the sand and a fitness centre. The resort is pet-friendly. Dona Paula is only minutes from Panaji, so Fontainhas and Old Goa are easy day trips. We place guests here for a heritage-style stay close to the capital, with the sea on the doorstep. Sunsets over the water are the daily ritual.
