Vembanad Lake: Alleppey, Pathiramanal Island, Kuttanad and the Boat Race
Vembanad Lake guide: India's longest lake, Alleppey boats and ferries, Pathiramanal Island, Kuttanad, the Nehru Trophy race and sunrise times by month.

Most people meet Vembanad Lake through a houseboat window. They see palms, a slow canal and a deck chair. That is a fine way to see it. It is also a small part of the picture.
Vembanad is the largest lake in Kerala and the longest in India. It runs along the coast for close to a hundred kilometres, feeds a network of canals, and sits beside farmland that lies below sea level. Understanding it makes the houseboat day richer, and it helps you choose better boats.
Figures were checked in October 2026. Sources give very different numbers for the lake's area, so this guide uses the figures that agree and says where they do not. Boat fares change, so confirm them locally.

Why the lake matters
The lake is the spine of the backwaters. Rivers flowing off the Western Ghats meet it and spread into canals and lagoons. Kuttanad, the low-lying farmland beside it, is called the rice bowl of Kerala. It is one of the few places in India where crops are grown below sea level.
A salinity barrier, the Thanneermukkom bund, now splits the lake so that salt water from the sea stays out of the paddy land at one end. That has changed the lake's ecology, and local writers note problems with weed and pollution at some spots.

Treat the lake as a working place. Boats here carry goods, passengers and farmers as well as tourists.
Four ways to see it
Way | What you get | Roughly how long | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
Public ferry (Alappuzha to Kottayam) | The cheapest and most local route | 2 to 3 hours | Curious travellers, early risers |
Shared or short motor boat | A quick tour of canals and the lake edge | 1 to 3 hours | Short stays |
Private houseboat (kettuvallam) | Meals and a night on the water | 1 to 2 nights | Couples, families |
Water taxi or canoe | The narrow canals and village life | Half a day | Photographers and slow travellers |
The State Water Transport Department runs the public ferries. A December 2025 report put the Kottayam to Alappuzha fare at about ₹29. A faster boat on the same route was reported at ₹50 to ₹100, with a journey of about two hours. Fares and timetables change, so confirm at the jetty.
For a longer day, a boat runs between Alappuzha and Kollam through the Ashtamudi and Vembanad waters. Reports give about eight hours and a fare of ₹400 to ₹600.
Alleppey and the lake
Alleppey, or Alappuzha, is the southern gateway. Most houseboats start here, and the town sits between the sea and the backwaters, with canals threaded through it.
The lake itself opens up north of town. Its stretches have different names and moods. The part beside Alleppey is Punnamada, where the famous boat race is held. Farther north the water widens and the shore turns to coconut palms and paddy.

Pathiramanal Island
Pathiramanal, which means "sands of midnight", is a small island in the lake near Muhamma. It is covered in trees and is known to birdwatchers, who go there for local and migratory species.
You reach it by boat. A 2022 report listed a water taxi from Muhamma at about ₹1,500 per trip, or about ₹150 each if ten people share, running from morning to late afternoon. Treat that as a guide rather than a current price, and ask your hotel to arrange it.

Go in the morning, when the light is soft and the birds are active. Carry water and a hat, because there is little shade on the boat.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the Punnamada stretch of the lake. It is a contest between long snake boats, each close to 100 feet, paddled in time to boat songs. It is part of the Champions Boat League and falls in the Onam season, in late summer.
The date is set each year, so check before you plan around it. If your trip overlaps, book your Alleppey stay and your viewing seat early. The town fills up.
Kumarakom and the eastern shore
The eastern shore of the lake is quieter than Alleppey. Kumarakom has a bird sanctuary, lakeside resorts and a gentler pace. Our Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary visitor guide covers it in detail.

What to pair it with
Kumarakom is the best companion stop on the eastern shore, with a bird sanctuary and quiet resorts.
Fort Kochi is about two hours away by road. Read Fort Kochi things to do in two days.
Munnar and Periyar are the usual hill and wildlife additions. See Periyar Tiger Reserve boat and trek guide.

How to plan your visit
Pick the boat first. A ferry, a shared boat or a houseboat gives very different days.
Travel in the cool months. November to February is best.
Go early for light and birdlife.
Ask about the route before you book a houseboat, because the best canals are not on every route.
Carry water and sun protection.
Leave the plastic behind. The wetland is fragile.
Where it fits in Kerala
Alleppey and Kumarakom are the usual backwater stops between Kochi and the south. Our field guide to places to visit in Kerala shows how they fit with hills and beaches, and the best time to visit Kerala month by month helps you choose the season.
