Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is small, quiet and easy to like. It covers about 14 acres on the shore of Vembanad Lake, in Kottayam district. It was a plantation before it was protected, and the old trees now hold herons, egrets, darters and cormorants.

You do not come here for a big-game safari. You come for early light on still water, the sound of birds settling in the branches and a slow walk on a raised path. It pairs perfectly with a stay at a lakeside resort.

This guide gives you the facts first, then the best months and hours, then how to fit the sanctuary into a Kerala trip. Details were checked in October 2026. Fees and hours can change, so confirm at the gate.

Fees are set locally and revised from time to time, and sources vary. The figures above are a guide. A local guide is worth hiring, as the birds are easy to miss in the foliage.

How a visit works

A raised path loops through the trees. Watchtowers let you look over the nesting areas without disturbing them. Walk slowly, keep your voice low and let your eyes adjust.

A boat on Vembanad Lake is a good addition. Most resorts arrange a morning boat that skirts the sanctuary's edge and moves through the backwater channels. Ask for a country boat or a small motor boat rather than a large noisy one.
