Kerala tour cost per person 2026-27 is easier to work out than it looks, once you stop asking for one number. The total is the sum of six lines: stays, a car and driver, a houseboat, entry fees, activities and meals. Three of those lines, the stay, the car and the houseboat, are shared between travellers, so the cost per person falls as your group grows.

This guide shows how each line works for a classic 6-night loop through Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. It gives the entry fees and boat fares we could confirm, and a simple method for the rest. We do not publish package prices in the Journal, so use this to read any quote with confidence.

The first three lines are shared. Divide each by the number of travellers to get the per-person cost. That is why a couple pays more per head than a family of four for the same car and houseboat.

Kerala tour cost per person: stays

Stays are usually the biggest line. Kerala offers everything from homestays to hill villas and lakeside resorts, so the rate varies widely. We will not give a single nightly figure, because there isn't a fair one.

Use this formula instead:

Stay cost per person = (nightly room rate × nights) ÷ guests sharing the room

Two travellers sharing a room each pay half. A family of four in two rooms pays the same per head as two couples. Always ask for the rate per room.

How the season moves the rate

December and January are the busiest months, with the backwaters at their best and Munnar cool. Rates rise then. The monsoon months cost less, but some boat trips are reduced and hill roads need care. Shoulder months give a good balance. Our places to visit in Kerala guide explains what each region offers through the year.

Kerala car and driver cost per person

A private car is the usual way to cover Kerala's four regions. A 6-night loop from Kochi covers roughly 430 km, and much of it is slow hill driving. Our Kerala distances guide lists each leg.

Car cost depends on three things: the number of days, the distance, and the vehicle size. A larger vehicle for a family costs more, but split across four people it often costs less per head than two small cars.

Questions to ask about the car

  1. Is the driver's food and stay included?

  2. Are tolls and parking included?

  3. What is the daily distance limit?

  4. Is the vehicle air-conditioned throughout?

Kerala houseboat cost per person

The houseboat is the line travellers misjudge most. There is no standard price. Operators vary boat size, bedroom count, air-conditioning hours and meals. Our guide to Alleppey houseboat prices explains the drivers in detail.

Day cruise or overnight

A day cruise lasts about six hours and includes lunch. An overnight stay costs far more, because it includes dinner, breakfast, a bedroom and a crew. If you are on a tighter budget, a day cruise gives you the backwaters without the overnight price. If you want the quiet of a night on the water, budget for it early.

Bedrooms and tier

Each bedroom adds cost. Deluxe, premium and luxury tiers are not standard across operators. Compare what is included, not the label.

Entry fees and boat rides in Kerala

These are the small fixed costs. We checked them against operator and park pages in October 2026. Fees change, so confirm before you go.

How group size changes the cost per person

Shared lines get cheaper per head as the group grows. Personal lines stay the same.

A solo traveller pays the most per head, because nothing is shared. A family of four in one large car and one two-bedroom houseboat usually pays the least per head on those lines. Ask each operator for a quote by group size, not a single average.

Two fixed lines are known: roughly ₹650 per person for Eravikulam and the Periyar boat. Everything else comes from your quotes. That is the honest way to build a Kerala budget.

Three ways to trim a Kerala budget without losing the trip

  1. Shorten the loop by one stop. Dropping Thekkady saves a long hill drive and a night. Our 7-day Kerala itinerary shows how the legs fit.

  2. Swap the overnight boat for a day cruise. You still see the backwaters, and you keep a night in a proper bed.

  3. Travel in a shoulder month. September, October and early March cost less than the December peak, with fewer crowds.

Do not trim the car quality or the driver. Hill roads reward an experienced driver.

Why Kerala quotes differ so much

Two quotes for the same route can be far apart. Check these points.

  • Hotel category. A heritage villa and a simple hotel are different products.

  • Houseboat type. Day or overnight, one bedroom or three.

  • Inclusions. Meals, transfers, entry fees and activities.

  • Vehicle. Size, air conditioning and driver costs.

  • Season. Compare the same dates.

Our advice

Fix your nights and your route first, then choose the houseboat, then the hotels. Do not drop the houseboat to save money if it is the reason you came. A day cruise is a fair compromise. Keep the car and driver for the whole loop, because Kerala's roads are slow and a change of vehicle wastes time. Avoid quotes that do not say what the houseboat includes. If you would like a worked quote for your dates, we can build one for your group.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Kerala tour cost per person in 2026-27?

There is no single figure. The total depends on stays, car, houseboat and meals, and it falls per head as your group grows. Use the six-line method above to build your own.

How much does a 6-night Kerala trip cost per person?

Add your stay cost divided by guests, your car cost divided by guests, your houseboat share, entry fees and meals. Our worked table shows each step.

How much is the Periyar boat ride in Thekkady?

A KTDC portal lists ₹450 per person including GST, for about 1.5 hours. Another page showed a different tariff, so confirm on the portal you use.

How much is the Eravikulam entry fee?

A park-guide page lists about ₹200 for Indian adults, ₹150 for children and ₹500 for foreign visitors. Confirm at the booking site.

Is a houseboat included in Kerala packages?

Often, but check whether it is a day cruise or overnight, and how many bedrooms. This changes the price a great deal.

Which month is cheapest for Kerala?

The monsoon is usually cheapest, but some activities are reduced. Shoulder months give a better balance than December and January.
