Houseboat prices in Alleppey vary widely, and the same-looking boat can cost several times more depending on a handful of factors. This guide explains what drives the price, so you can read a quote properly instead of guessing.

We do not publish a single figure, because the rate changes with season, boat and operator. What follows is how the price is built.

Factor

Effect on price

Season

Peak season from December to January costs the most

Overnight or day cruise

An overnight stay costs far more than a day cruise

Boat category

Deluxe, premium and luxury tiers differ widely

Number of bedrooms

Each added bedroom raises the cost

AC or non-AC

AC costs more, and is usually needed in warm months

Route and time

A longer route or a lake with a closed canal costs more

Meals and extras

Included meals, a chef and activities

Day cruise or overnight

A day cruise runs for about six hours, usually from late morning to late afternoon, and includes lunch. An overnight stay adds dinner, breakfast and a night moored on the water, and it costs a lot more.

If you have little time, a day cruise is a good way to see the backwaters. For the experience most people picture, the overnight is the one.

Boat categories

Operators sell deluxe, premium and luxury tiers, and the definitions are not standard.

  • Deluxe: a basic boat, often with a simple interior.

  • Premium: better fittings, larger rooms and AC.

  • Luxury: private lounges, a sundeck and a chef-led menu.

Always ask for the boat's photos and its actual fittings, not just its tier.

Seasonal swings

December to January is the peak and costs the most. February and March are good value and still dry. From April to May it is hot, and rates fall. The monsoon brings the lowest rates, with rain and fewer cruises.

What to ask in a quote

  1. Is it a day cruise or an overnight?

  2. How many bedrooms, and is the boat private?

  3. Are meals, tea and a chef included?

  4. Is AC included, and for how many hours?

  5. Are taxes and fuel included?

  6. Where does the boat start and end?

Our view

Treat the cheapest quote as a warning, not a bargain, and pay for a boat in good condition. A good boat, a short route and a quiet mooring are worth more than a larger cabin. See our houseboat stay guide for what the night is really like, and the Vembanad Lake guide for the water you will be on.
