Athirappilly Waterfalls tumbling over a rocky ledge with forested hills behind

Athirappilly is the largest waterfall in Kerala, and it is a popular day trip from Kochi. The falls drop about 24 metres across a wide rocky ledge on the Chalakudy River, in a forested setting at the edge of the Western Ghats.

This guide covers the distance, the timings, the best season and how to see the falls properly.

What it is

Athirappilly sits in a green belt of forest on the river, and the falls are broad and loud after the rains. The setting has been used in several well-known Indian films. The area is also known for hornbills and other forest birds.

A short walk takes you from the car park to the viewing platforms. The path down to the base of the falls is steep and is sometimes closed in heavy rain, so follow the staff's advice.

Best time to go

  • September to December: the falls are full and the forest is green.

  • January to March: pleasant weather, though the flow is thinner.

  • June to August: the heaviest flow, but the monsoon can close paths and make the roads slippery.

  • April to May: hot, and the water is lowest.

Go in the morning, when the light is better and the car park is calmer.

Timings and tickets

The site is open during the day, with a small entry ticket and a separate charge for parking and cameras. Timings and fees change, so check before you go, and do not enter areas that are closed.

Vazhachal and the road

The Vazhachal Falls, a little way upriver, are quieter and make a good second stop. The road between the two runs through forest, and you may see macaques and, with luck, hornbills. Drive with care.
