Pangong Lake At A Glance

Pangong Tso sits at 4,350 metres in eastern Ladakh. The lake runs for about 134 kilometres. Roughly two-thirds of it lies across the border in Tibet. The water is brackish, so it freezes solid in winter despite the salt. Its colour changes through the day, from pale turquoise to a hard deep blue, as the light moves. The mountains around it are bare and brown, which makes the water look even brighter. Most visitors reach it from Leh in a long day over the Chang La pass. The small village of Spangmik, on the south shore, has the tented camps and guesthouses. There is no town, no market and little mobile signal. Nights are cold even in summer, and the sky after dark is very clear.

Pangong Sarai

Pangong Sarai is a tented camp on the south shore of Pangong Lake, near Spangmik, at about 4,300 metres. It is the most comfortable stay on the lake, which is not a high bar, but it is a real one. The accommodation is around 30 yurt-style tents and a few mud cottages. Each tent has a proper bed, an attached bathroom with a hot shower, and an electric blanket for the cold nights. There is oxygen support on hand and a solar and generator backup for power. Meals are served in a central dining tent. The camp only runs in the short season, roughly May to September, and closes when the lake road ices over. This is the one property both our luxury and premium Ladakh trips use for the Pangong night. There is nothing else at this standard on the shore.
