Kargil At A Glance

Kargil is the second town of Ladakh, after Leh. It sits on the Suru river at about 2,700 metres, on the old road between Leh and Srinagar. It is greener and lower than Leh, lined with poplar and willow. The people here are mostly Muslim, and the town has a different feel from Buddhist central Ladakh. On the road in from Leh stands the Mulbekh Maitreya, a nine-metre Buddha carved into a rock face more than a thousand years ago. South of the town the Suru Valley runs up towards the Nun-Kun massif, two peaks over seven thousand metres. Kargil is also the way in to Zanskar. It works as a one or two-night stop on a longer western Ladakh loop.

Hotel The Kargil sits in the middle of Kargil town, off the main market on Hospital Road. It opened in 2017 and was the first fully air-conditioned hotel in Kargil. There are thirty rooms and three suites, all heated, with modern bathrooms and hot water around the clock. The upper floors look out over the town and the surrounding hills. There is a restaurant serving Ladakhi, North Indian and Kashmiri food, a coffee shop and a travel desk that arranges permits and cars. Kargil has no luxury hotel. This is the best in town, and it is the property both our premium and luxury western-Ladakh trips use for the Kargil night.
