Prem Mandir, Vrindavan, lit in purple at night with crowds in front

Prem Mandir is the newest of Vrindavan's big temples, and it is the easiest one to visit. It is built of white marble, set in a clean garden, and lit in colour every evening. Unlike the older temples, it is calm, spacious and free to enter.

This guide covers timings, the light show and how to fit it into a Vrindavan day.

Timings

The temple keeps a morning session and an evening session, with a break in the afternoon. The hours change with the season, and the evening lighting is the main reason to go.

  • Morning: opens early and closes around midday.

  • Afternoon: closed for a few hours.

  • Evening: reopens, with the lights starting at dusk.

Check the day's timings on the way, as they differ between summer and winter.

The light show

After sunset the temple is lit in a changing sequence of colours, and the lights are part of the experience. There is also a musical fountain programme in the garden on some evenings, with a short show.

Plan to arrive an hour before sunset. You can see the temple in daylight, then watch the colours change as the sky darkens.

What to see

  • The marble facade: carved with scenes from Krishna's life.

  • The inner halls: with statues and tableaux of Krishna's story.

  • The gardens: laid out with fountains and sculptures.

Rules

Dress modestly and remove footwear at the entrance. Cameras are allowed in the garden, but there may be restrictions inside the halls. The queue is usually shorter than at older temples.
