Romantic Places in Delhi for Couples: Gardens, Tombs and Rooftop Dinners
The most romantic places in Delhi for couples: Mughal gardens, tombs and heritage hotel evenings, in a slow day plan with timings and tips.

The most romantic places in Delhi are not the busiest ones. They are the Mughal gardens, the old tombs under big trees, and the long lawns where the city slows down for an hour. Delhi has more quiet corners than most visitors expect, if you go at the right time of day.
This guide is for couples who want a gentle day in Delhi, not a rush through every monument. It picks a handful of gardens and tombs, puts them in a sensible order, and suggests where to end the evening. For a fuller sightseeing plan, see our Delhi one day itinerary and the Delhi in two days guide.
The idea is simple. Do the gardens in the morning light, rest through the hot middle of the day, and return for the golden hour.
The plan at a glance
Time | Stop | Why | Allow |
|---|---|---|---|
7:30 am | Sunder Nursery | A 90-acre heritage park, quiet early | 1.5 hours |
9:30 am | Humayun's Tomb | A Mughal garden tomb, best before crowds | 1.5 hours |
12:00 pm | Lunch and rest | Delhi is crowded and warm at midday | 2 to 3 hours |
4:00 pm | Lodhi Garden | Tombs among lawns and old trees | 1.5 hours |
6:30 pm | Dinner with a view | A hotel terrace or rooftop | 2 hours |
Morning: Sunder Nursery and Humayun's Tomb
Start at Sunder Nursery. It is a 90-acre heritage park next to Humayun's Tomb. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, with the Central Public Works Department and the Archaeological Survey of India, spent about ten years restoring it, and it opened to the public in 2018. It has lawns, water channels, Mughal-era tombs and a lot of mature trees. In the early morning it is quiet, and joggers and birdwatchers outnumber tourists.
Entry fees have changed more than once and sources disagree on the current figure, so check at the gate. Timings follow daylight, and the park is generally open from about 7:00 am.
Then walk to Humayun's Tomb, which sits across the road. It was commissioned in the 1560s by Bega Begum for her husband, the emperor Humayun, and it is the first monumental garden tomb in India. The setting is a charbagh, a garden divided into four parts by water channels. It is the best place in Delhi to slow down.

Most sources give the ticket as ₹35 for Indian visitors and about ₹550 for foreign visitors, with online booking available. Children under 15 are generally free. Opening hours follow the sun, so confirm them on the day. Allow a full hour inside. Isa Khan's tomb, in the same complex, is quieter and often empty.

Midday: rest
By late morning, Delhi is busy. Go back to your hotel, or find a long lunch near the Lodhi Road and Khan Market area. A slow lunch and a pause are part of the plan, not a gap in it.
If you want a rooftop view at lunchtime, many hotels offer one. Ask your hotel to suggest a table in advance, because the best ones book up.
Afternoon: Lodhi Garden
Lodhi Garden is a public park in central Delhi, with 15th and 16th-century tombs of the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties set among lawns, flowerbeds and old trees. Entry is free and the gates open early and close in the evening, so check the times before you go.
Go after 4:00 pm, when the light softens and the paths fill with walkers. Bring nothing but water. Sit on the grass near one of the domed tombs and watch the light change. It is one of the few places in Delhi where couples can do absolutely nothing and nobody minds.
Evening: dinner with a view
Delhi's best romantic evenings tend to be indoors or on a terrace. Choose by mood.
A heritage hotel: The Imperial opened in 1936 on Janpath, and is set in landscaped gardens with Art Deco interiors. Its atrium is known for afternoon tea, and its lawns suit a slow evening.
A hotel with a view of the tomb: The Oberoi, New Delhi overlooks Humayun's Tomb on one side and the golf course on the other. Its rooftop terrace is known for al fresco evening drinks.
We do not name individual restaurants in this guide. Ask your hotel or a trip designer to book a table, and confirm hours, dress codes and booking rules.
Other places worth adding
If you have a second half day, these are the next best choices.
Safdarjung's Tomb: A late Mughal garden tomb, smaller than Humayun's and often quieter.
Agrasen ki Baoli: A stepwell in the middle of the city, striking in low light. It is small, and ten minutes is usually enough.
Hauz Khas: Ruins of a 14th-century complex around a water tank, with cafés around it. It is livelier than the others and best in the late afternoon.
A walk near India Gate in the evening: Families and couples gather on the lawns. It is busy and cheerful, not secluded.
Getting around
Delhi is large, and traffic is heavy at rush hours. A private car and driver is the easiest way to link these stops. The gardens and tombs above sit within a short drive of each other. Sunder Nursery and Humayun's Tomb are across the road from one another, and Lodhi Garden is a short drive away outside peak hours.
The metro is useful for single trips. The nearest metro station to Sunder Nursery is JLN Stadium on the Violet Line, and the walk is short.
Best time to go
Months | What to expect | Notes for couples |
|---|---|---|
October to March | Cool, dry, pleasant days | The best season for gardens |
November to January | Cold mornings, haze, and often poor air quality | Check air quality before outdoor plans |
April to June | Hot to very hot | Visit at dawn or after sunset only |
July to September | Humid, with monsoon rain | Lush gardens, uncomfortable heat |
For gardens and tombs, October to March is the sensible window. Air quality can be poor between late autumn and January, so pack a mask if you are sensitive, and check the forecast. For more on the season, see our Golden Triangle honeymoon guide.
What is not romantic
Be honest about the things that can spoil a day.
Traffic, which makes every transfer longer than it looks
Crowds at weekends and on public holidays
Heat in April to June, and smog in winter
Touts at the busiest monuments
Plan around them. Go early, go midweek if you can, and keep the afternoon free.
