Banke Bihari is the most visited temple in Vrindavan, and it is also the most crowded. The lanes are narrow, the rush is intense and the rituals are unusual, so a little planning makes a big difference.

This guide covers timings, the curtain tradition, the best times to go and how to stay comfortable.

Timings

The temple keeps seasonal hours, with a morning session and an evening session and a long closure in the afternoon.

  • Summer: opens in the morning and closes around noon, then reopens in the evening.

  • Winter: opens a little later and closes earlier in the evening.

  • Closed: midday, when the deity rests.

Exact times shift between seasons and on festival days, so confirm the day's timings on the way.

What makes it different

Banke Bihari is known for the curtain. The deity is shown only for short periods, and a curtain is drawn across repeatedly. Devotees believe the deity's gaze is too intense to hold for long. Tradition also means there is no bell or conch inside, so the temple has a hushed mood in the middle of a noisy crowd.

Mangala aarti is held only once a year, on Janmashtami.

The crowd, honestly

This is a very crowded temple, and the lane to it is narrow. On weekends, festivals and in winter, the queue can be long and the crowd can push. For a visitor not used to crowds, this is a trial.

  • Go early: a weekday morning is calmest.

  • Avoid weekends and festival days: Holi, Janmashtami and Radhashtami are extremely busy.

  • Go in a small group: keep together and agree a meeting point.

  • Keep valuables safe: leave bags and jewellery at the hotel.

Monkeys and belongings

Monkeys are common near the temple and are known to snatch glasses, phones and bags. Keep things in an inner pocket, and do not carry food in the open.

Dress and etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees, remove footwear, and expect phones and cameras to be restricted inside. Lockers are available nearby.

How to reach it

Vrindavan is on the Delhi and Agra road, and combines with Mathura. See our Vrindavan and Mathura day-trip guide, and for the lights, Prem Mandir.
