This guide gives the distances and times, and the stops that make the drive worthwhile.

By road
The route follows the national highway through Ajmer, then south through Bhilwara or via Chittorgarh. Allow seven hours with a lunch stop. It is a good road, and a car with a driver gives you the option of stopping at places that are not on the rail line.
By train
A few trains run between the two cities, taking about seven hours, and they stop at Ajmer and Chittorgarh. A daytime train is relaxing, but it is slow. Book ahead for the best seats.
By flight
Direct flights between Jaipur and Udaipur operate on some days and take about an hour. They are the fastest option if you do not want to spend the day on the road.
Stops worth making
Ajmer and Pushkar: a holy city and a sacred lake, with a night in Pushkar a good choice. See our Jaipur to Pushkar guide.
Chittorgarh: a huge hill fort. See the Chittorgarh guide.
Sawariya Seth: a busy Krishna temple near Chittorgarh. See the Sawariya Seth guide.
Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh: a longer detour. See the Ranakpur guide.
Which should you choose?
Choose a car if you want to stop at Pushkar or Chittorgarh. Break the trip with a night.
Choose the train for a calm day and views of the countryside.
Choose the flight if you are short of time.
A suggested plan
Leave Jaipur at 8 am, stop at Pushkar or Ajmer for lunch, then drive on to Chittorgarh for the fort in the late afternoon. Reach Udaipur by evening. It is a long day, so a night in Pushkar or Chittorgarh makes it easier.
For the wider route, see the Rajasthan city order guide and the Udaipur in three days guide.
