Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India, and it carries more of the history of Rajput Rajasthan than any other. It is about two hours from Udaipur, and a day trip is the usual way to see it.

This guide covers the distance, the timings and how to cover a very large site without wasting the day.

What it is

The fort sits on a long, flat-topped hill, and its walls enclose palaces, temples, towers, tanks and ruins. It was the capital of Mewar until the 16th century, and three famous sieges, in 1303, 1535 and 1568, shape its story. It is part of the UNESCO listing for the hill forts of Rajasthan.

The history is sombre, and the stories of the jauhar, the mass self-immolation by the women of the fort, are central to how it is remembered.

What to see

  • Vijay Stambh: the 15th-century Tower of Victory, about 37 metres high, with a narrow staircase inside.

  • Kirti Stambh: a smaller Jain tower from the 12th century.

  • Rana Kumbha Palace: a ruined royal palace.

  • Padmini's Palace: a small pavilion beside a lake, tied to the legend of Rani Padmini.

  • Meera Temple and Kumbha Shyam Temple: two temples linked to Meera Bai.

  • Gaumukh Reservoir: a water tank fed by a spring.

The sites are spread over about 13 km of road, so a vehicle is essential.

How to cover it

  1. Hire an auto or use your own car, with a guide if you can.

  2. Start at the Vijay Stambh, then go to the palaces and temples.

  3. Keep Padmini's Palace and the Gaumukh Reservoir for last.

  4. Allow time for lunch, as there are limited options inside.

Timings and entry

The fort opens in the morning and closes in the evening, though individual monuments keep their own hours. Entry fees apply at a few sites, and Indian and foreign rates differ. Confirm the hours before you go.

The cool months from October to March are best. In summer the exposed hill is very hot.

Pairing it with other stops

Sawariya Seth temple sits on the road between Udaipur and Chittorgarh, so the two make a natural pair. See our Sawariya Seth guide and, for a different fort, Kumbhalgarh.
