Pushkar and Ajmer sit side by side west of Jaipur, and they are the natural stop between Jaipur and Jodhpur or Udaipur. The road is straightforward, and the choice is whether to go as a day trip or as a night on the way through.

This guide gives the distances and the times, and a plan for each.

By road

The drive follows the national highway west from Jaipur, a good road for most of the way, with a few congested stretches near towns. A car with a driver is the most flexible option for a day trip or a stopover.

By train

Trains run between Jaipur and Ajmer, taking roughly two to three hours. From Ajmer you need a taxi or a bus for the last 14 km to Pushkar. A train suits you if you are travelling light, but a car is easier for the Pushkar leg.

What to see in Ajmer

  • Ajmer Sharif Dargah: the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of the most important Sufi sites in India. It is crowded and moving. Cover your head, and take little with you.

  • Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra: an early mosque with fine carved arches.

  • Ana Sagar Lake: a quiet lakeside for an evening.

What to see in Pushkar

  • Pushkar Lake and its ghats: 52 stepped ghats around a sacred lake. Visit in the morning or at dusk.

  • Brahma Temple: one of very few temples to Brahma in India.

  • Savitri Temple: on the hill above, with a view over the lake and the desert. Go in the early morning.

  • The bazaar: colourful, with silver, textiles and snacks.

See our Pushkar guide for rules at the ghats and the temple.

A day trip or a night?

  • Day trip from Jaipur: leave by 7 am, see Ajmer in the morning and Pushkar in the afternoon, and return by evening. It is a long day of about 6 hours on the road.

  • A night in Pushkar: better, because the lake is best at dusk and at dawn. Combine it with the drive to Udaipur or Jodhpur the next day.

The Camel Fair

Pushkar's famous camel fair takes place in the Hindu month of Kartik, usually in late October or November. The town fills up and prices rise, so book months ahead if you want to go.
