About This Journey

Rhinos & the River — Premium

Rhinos and the River is the shortest way to combine Assam's two signature images — the Brahmaputra at Guwahati and a Kaziranga safari — in three nights. The trip opens with an evening arrival on the river, then heads to Kaziranga for a dawn elephant safari and afternoon jeep drive before returning to Guwahati to depart.

It covers exactly the same ground as Assam's other short breaks from this base, with the emphasis placed squarely on the two headline draws named in the title — no additional stops, no tea country, just the river and the rhinos in a long-weekend format.

  1. 01

The Brahmaputra as the trip's opening image

Arriving into Guwahati as the light fades over the river gives this short trip a strong, immediate sense of place before Kaziranga even comes into view.

  2. 02

    A single, efficient safari day

The dawn elephant safari and afternoon jeep drive are scheduled back to back on one day, keeping the itinerary tight enough for a genuine short break.

  3. 03

    A no-frills, two-stop format

With Guwahati and Kaziranga as the only stops, this route is built for travellers who want the rhinos and the river specifically, without additional sightseeing days.

Chapter Three — Day by Day

A broad green Assam field runs to a tree line under a soft sky, typical countryside along the Guwahati-Kaziranga road.

Day 2 · Guwahati → Kaziranga

Guwahati to Kaziranga — East Along the Brahmaputra

The drive east follows the south bank of the Brahmaputra for about two hundred kilometres and five hours, through paddy fields, tea gardens and small towns, with the hills of Meghalaya away to the south. There are stops for tea and for lunch on the way. You reach the lodges at Kohora, just outside the park's Central Range gate, in the afternoon, with time to settle in and meet the naturalist before dark.

An open safari jeep drives a dirt track beside tall green grass and forest in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.

Day 3 · Kaziranga

Kaziranga — Elephant Safari at Dawn, Jeep in the Afternoon

The elephant safari goes out at first light from Kohora or Bagori, for about an hour, walking through grass that is often higher than a jeep. This is where the rhinos feed, so it is the closest you will get to one. The mist lifts during the ride. Back for breakfast, then a slow middle of the day. The afternoon is a jeep safari of about three hours through the Central Range, for rhino, wild elephant, swamp deer and buffalo, and the chance of a tiger in the grass.

01

Guwahati

Arrive in Guwahati — the Brahmaputra at Dusk

You land at Guwahati, the hub for the whole northeast. The city sits where the Brahmaputra narrows between hills, and the river is the thing to see first. In the late afternoon a cruise boat runs out onto the water for the sunset, past Umananda island and under the temple hill, usually with tea or a meal and a short set of Assamese music. It is an easy way to arrive and get the shape of the place.

Guwahati

Depart Guwahati

A last morning in the city before the flight out. If there is time, a final hour on the river, a visit to the Assam State Museum, or the silk shops for Assam's own muga and eri weaves. Guwahati's airport connects to Delhi, Kolkata and the rest of the northeast, so onward plans are straightforward.

Frequently Asked

Before You Book

Is this itinerary different from Assam's other short breaks?

The route — Guwahati arrival, then Kaziranga for a dawn safari and jeep drive — is shared with Assam's other three-night breaks from this base; this version is simply framed around its two title elements.

Can this short break be extended into a longer Assam trip?

Yes — travellers who want to continue into Jorhat's tea country or Majuli's monasteries after this break can look at Assam's longer six- and seven-night itineraries from the same starting point.
