First, 3 nights in Guwahati
Radisson Blu Hotel, Guwahati
A modern five-star on the Brahmaputra bank in Guwahati — river-view rooms, an outdoor pool and a spa, minutes from Kamakhya and the road to Kaziranga.

About This Journey
The Grand Journey is Assam covered properly, in eight nights, without skipping the pieces shorter trips leave out. Guwahati gets a full day for Kamakhya, Umananda and the old city, then a day trip to Pobitora adds an early rhino sighting before the road turns east to Kaziranga for two full days of game drives — a dawn elephant safari followed by an afternoon jeep, then a full day working two separate ranges of the park.
From there the trip continues on to Jorhat's tea estates and a day trip to Majuli, the river island and its monasteries, before returning to Guwahati. It is the longest of Assam's routes here, and the only one built at this length — the extra nights go entirely into unhurried time at Kaziranga and the tea country beyond it, not padding.
Most Assam itineraries pick one rhino sanctuary; this one covers both — Pobitora as a close-in day trip from Guwahati, then Kaziranga's much larger ranges over two full days.
A full day is set aside to cover two separate ranges of the park in addition to the dawn elephant safari and jeep drive, giving a materially wider view of Kaziranga's terrain than a single-day visit allows.
Rather than ending at Kaziranga, the journey continues to Jorhat's tea estates and across to Majuli's river-island monasteries — a full change of landscape and pace in the second half of the trip.
Chapter Two — Where You'll Stay
Handpicked along your own route — not a hotel chain repeated city to city.

First, 3 nights in Guwahati
A modern five-star on the Brahmaputra bank in Guwahati — river-view rooms, an outdoor pool and a spa, minutes from Kamakhya and the road to Kaziranga.

Next, 3 nights in Kaziranga
A small eco-lodge of stilted bamboo cottages on the Diphlu River at Kaziranga — private river decks, resident naturalists, and every safari arranged.

Finally, 2 nights in Jorhat
An 1880 family-owned tea manor in the gardens outside Jorhat — verandas, a library, Assamese home cooking, and tea-garden walks before breakfast.
Chapter Three — Day by Day
7 of your 9days — the full itinerary follows below. Scroll to travel the route.

Day 2 · Guwahati
A full day in the city. Kamakhya first, the beehive-towered Shakti temple on Nilachal hill, best early before the queues build. Then a short ferry to Umananda, the small wooded island in the river with a Shiva temple and a troop of golden langurs. The afternoon can take in the Assam State Museum, the old Uzan Bazar lanes and the markets, or a run out to Hajo, the town holy to three faiths at once. A slow, temple-and-river day.

Day 3 · Guwahati
An early start east from Guwahati, about ninety minutes, to the Pobitora sanctuary. It is small, under forty square kilometres, and it has the densest one-horned rhino population in the world. A jeep safari of an hour or two on the grassland tracks almost always finds several rhinos in the open, along with wild buffalo and a great many water birds. Back in Guwahati by early afternoon, with time for the river or the museum. It is a strong rhino day for anyone not going on to Kaziranga.

Day 4 · Guwahati → Kaziranga
The drive east follows the south bank of the Brahmaputra for about two hundred kilometres and five hours, through paddy fields, tea gardens and small towns, with the hills of Meghalaya away to the south. There are stops for tea and for lunch on the way. You reach the lodges at Kohora, just outside the park's Central Range gate, in the afternoon, with time to settle in and meet the naturalist before dark.

Day 5 · Kaziranga
The elephant safari goes out at first light from Kohora or Bagori, for about an hour, walking through grass that is often higher than a jeep. This is where the rhinos feed, so it is the closest you will get to one. The mist lifts during the ride. Back for breakfast, then a slow middle of the day. The afternoon is a jeep safari of about three hours through the Central Range, for rhino, wild elephant, swamp deer and buffalo, and the chance of a tiger in the grass.

Day 6 · Kaziranga
A deeper day in the park, for travellers with the time. A morning jeep safari in the Western Range at Bagori, which has open country and high rhino numbers. The middle of the day at the orchid park, which grows hundreds of the region's orchid species and puts on Assamese folk dance. An afternoon safari in the Eastern Range at Agaratoli, the quietest range, with more water, more birds and a good chance of otters and fishing eagles. Two ranges in a day shows how different parts of the same park can be.

Day 7 · Kaziranga → Jorhat
A shorter drive, about two and a half hours, east and then south into upper Assam. The landscape becomes tea almost at once, garden after garden with the old bungalows set back among the bushes. You reach Jorhat, the tea capital, by early afternoon, and check in at one of the heritage estate bungalows. A walk through the garden before dark, and dinner is Assamese home cooking on the veranda.

Day 8 · Jorhat
A ferry from Nimati Ghat crosses the Brahmaputra to Majuli, the largest river island in the world, in about an hour. The island is the centre of Assamese Vaishnavism, and around twenty of its monasteries, the satras, are still active. You visit two or three: a long open prayer hall, monks farming, perhaps a Sattriya dance rehearsal. At Samaguri the monks make and teach the large painted masks used in religious plays, and you can build a small one. Back across the river by the late-afternoon ferry.
Chapter Four — The Full Itinerary
Every day, start to finish — including the transfers the day-by-day chapter above skipped.

Guwahati
You land at Guwahati, the hub for the whole northeast. The city sits where the Brahmaputra narrows between hills, and the river is the thing to see first. In the late afternoon a cruise boat runs out onto the water for the sunset, past Umananda island and under the temple hill, usually with tea or a meal and a short set of Assamese music. It is an easy way to arrive and get the shape of the place.

Guwahati
A last morning in the city before the flight out. If there is time, a final hour on the river, a visit to the Assam State Museum, or the silk shops for Assam's own muga and eri weaves. Guwahati's airport connects to Delhi, Kolkata and the rest of the northeast, so onward plans are straightforward.
