Kaziranga At A Glance
Kaziranga is a national park on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, about five hours east of Guwahati by road. It holds roughly two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, more than two thousand of them, in a floodplain of tall elephant grass, marsh and patches of forest. It is also a tiger reserve with one of the highest tiger densities in India, though tigers are hard to see in the grass. Wild elephants, water buffalo and swamp deer are common, and the birdlife is exceptional. The park is divided into four ranges, each with its own gate and character. Mornings are for the elephant-back safari through the grass; afternoons for a jeep along the tracks. The park opens around the first of November and closes for the monsoon at the end of April. The lodges sit just outside the Central Range gate at Kohora, in tea country.

Diphlu River Lodge sits on the bank of the Diphlu, a small river that marks the southern edge of Kaziranga, opposite the park. The cottages are built on stilts, in bamboo, cane and thatch, in the local way. Each has a private deck looking over the river or the forest. They are simple and well made, with no televisions, and the sound at night is the water and the birds. It is a small lodge, run on eco-friendly lines, and it is the property the British royal visit chose in 2016. The park's Central Range gate is a short drive, and the lodge arranges every safari, with naturalists who know the animals. It is the best stay at Kaziranga, and it books out well ahead in season.

IORA – The Retreat is a resort set in tea gardens at Kohora, just outside Kaziranga's Central Range gate. The rooms are large and modern, in low blocks among lawns and tea. There is an outdoor pool, a spa, a gym and a good restaurant, and space for children to run. It is the closest full-service resort to the main safari gate, so mornings start with the shortest drive. It arranges every jeep and elephant safari, and has its own naturalists. It is the premium choice at Kaziranga for travellers who want a pool and a spa alongside the wildlife, rather than a stilted forest cottage.
