About This Journey

Kolkata Heritage City Break — Luxury

A short break built around Kolkata's own character, with a genuine excursion into the Sundarbans rather than a token add-on. Four nights split two ways: two in the city for the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge and the Indian Museum, then two more out at the mangrove delta for a full-day safari before the return transfer and departure.

The city comes first here, and it earns that place — Kolkata's colonial-era landmarks and street-level character carry the opening days, with the Sundarbans arriving as a genuine change of scene rather than the trip's centre of gravity.

  1. 01

    Kolkata's colonial landmarks

The Victoria Memorial and Howrah Bridge open the trip, followed by the Indian Museum — a proper look at the city's colonial-era architecture and history before heading to the delta.

  2. 02

A full day on the Sundarbans' waterways

A full-day mangrove safari gives real time on the delta's channels, a complete change of pace and landscape from the city.

  3. 03

    Two distinct settings, four nights

Two nights in Kolkata and two at the Sundarbans keep the trip compact without rushing either half — a genuine short break rather than a long weekend stretched thin.

Day 2 · Kolkata

Kolkata — Howrah Bridge and the Indian Museum

A morning at the Indian Museum, the country's oldest, for its Egyptian, Mauryan and Buddhist collections, best seen before the midday heat. The afternoon is Howrah Bridge and the Hooghly riverfront, including the Mullick Ghat flower market beneath the bridge's Kolkata end, one of the largest in Asia. A short boat ride on the river at dusk gives the classic view of the bridge lit against the sky.

Day 3 · Kolkata → Sundarbans

Kolkata to the Sundarbans

A drive of about two and a half hours from Kolkata to Godkhali, the usual launch point for the delta, through the paddy country south of the city. From there a boat crossing of around an hour reaches the lodge, the roads giving way entirely to water. You arrive by early afternoon, with time to settle in before the first boat outing of the stay, usually a gentler village or birdwatching run rather than the full safari.

Day 4 · Sundarbans

Sundarbans — a Full-Day Mangrove Safari

A full day on the water, into the permitted channels of the reserve with a naturalist and, in the core zone, an armed forest-department guard as the park rules require. The boat moves slowly along the tidal creeks, watching the mud banks for pug marks and the water for crocodiles, with spotted deer, kingfishers and eagles seen far more often than the tiger itself. Lunch is taken on board or back at the lodge, depending on the tide.

Arrive in Kolkata — the Victoria Memorial

A direct arrival into Kolkata, by flight into Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport or by train. Once settled, the afternoon is the Victoria Memorial, the white marble hall and its sixty-four acres of gardens, and its museum of British-era Kolkata. The evening is Park Street, the city's old dining and entertainment strip, for a first Kolkata dinner.

Sundarbans to Kolkata — Departure

A last, shorter boat outing if the timing allows, or a quiet morning at the lodge. The return retraces the route: a boat back to Godkhali, then the road to Kolkata, about three and a half hours door to door. It is usually timed to reach the city in the afternoon, in time for an evening flight onward or a night in Kolkata before departure.

Frequently Asked

Before You Book

How far is the Sundarbans from Kolkata?

The Sundarbans is reached by road and boat from Kolkata, a half-day's travel each way, which this itinerary builds in as its own transfer day rather than treating it as instant.

Is four nights enough to see both Kolkata and the Sundarbans?

For a short break, yes — two nights each gives the city's core landmarks and one full mangrove safari day, though travellers wanting more depth in either place should look at the longer West Bengal circuits.
