It is a white colonial building around a courtyard pool and garden, with high-ceilinged public rooms, chandeliers and a long colonnaded verandah facing the street. It has hosted a long list of visiting royalty, writers and film stars over more than a century, and the hotel keeps that history visible in its corridors and its restaurants. It sits in the heart of the old business district, close to New Market and Park Street, and it remains the address most associated with grand Kolkata hospitality.

There is a small pool and a spa on the upper floors. It suits travellers who want to be in the middle of the Park Street scene rather than in a quieter colonial setting.
