Glenburn is a working tea garden founded in 1859, on a ridge above the Rungeet river with Kanchenjunga filling the horizon on a clear morning. Guests stay in two colonial-era planters' bungalows, the Burra Bungalow and the Water Lily Bungalow, furnished with the family's own antiques rather than as a conventional hotel. All meals are included and taken together, largely from the estate's own garden and dairy. The point of a stay is the garden itself: a walk through the tea rows with the manager, a visit to the factory where the leaf is still processed by hand in stages, and a tasting of the estate's own first and second flush teas. There is also a riverside camp lower down at the Rungeet for a change of scene. It is a genuine working-estate stay, not a resort built to look like one, and it runs on a full-board, few-rooms basis.

Mayfair occupies a former summer residence of the Sikkimese royal family, on the Jawahar Road ridge a short walk from the Mall. It is built up in tiers of turreted, slate-roofed cottages set into terraced gardens, with wood-panelled interiors and open fireplaces. There is an indoor pool and spa, and the grounds themselves, planted with rhododendron and magnolia, are worth the walk around on their own. Its position, close to the Mall, the zoo and the ropeway, makes it a practical base for Darjeeling's sights without losing the character a purely modern hotel would lack.

Silver Oaks is a colonial-era cottage hotel set in its own gardens on Rinkingpong Road, one of Kalimpong's older addresses. It is run by the Elgin group, which keeps a small collection of heritage hill hotels across Darjeeling and Sikkim, and the house style carries through here: low, slate-roofed buildings, open fires, and gardens planted with the region's orchids and cacti, a nod to Kalimpong's nursery trade. It is quiet and unhurried, a short walk from Kalimpong's small Mall and the Durpin monastery road, and it suits a two-night stop rather than a longer base.

The Oberoi Grand has stood on Chowringhee since 1892, and it is still known locally as the Grand Dame of the city. It is a white colonial building around a courtyard pool and garden, with high-ceilinged public rooms, chandeliers and a long colonnaded verandah facing the street. It has hosted a long list of visiting royalty, writers and film stars over more than a century, and the hotel keeps that history visible in its corridors and its restaurants. It sits in the heart of the old business district, close to New Market and Park Street, and it remains the address most associated with grand Kolkata hospitality.

The Park sits on Park Street, in the middle of the city's old entertainment and dining strip, and it has run as a design-forward hotel since long before that became a common idea in India. The rooms and public spaces mix contemporary design with local art and craft, and the hotel is as known for its nightlife — Someplace Else and Tantra, both long-running Kolkata institutions — as for its rooms. There is a small pool and a spa on the upper floors. It suits travellers who want to be in the middle of the Park Street scene rather than in a quieter colonial setting.

Sundarban Tiger Camp sits on the edge of the delta at Dayapur, reached by road from Kolkata to Godkhali and then a short boat crossing. It is a cluster of cottages and huts around a garden, built in local style with mud-and-thatch detailing, simple by design rather than luxurious, since the reserve itself is the draw. Meals are Bengali home-style, largely fish and rice, taken together in a central dining hut. The camp runs its own permitted boat safaris into the reserve's waterways with a naturalist and an armed forest-department guard, as required inside the core zone, along with village and birdwatching boat trips outside it. It is the most established of the Sundarbans lodges, and the standard base for a multi-day visit.
