West Bengal's delta half, without the hills. Two nights in Kolkata: the Victoria Memorial, the Indian Museum, Howrah Bridge and the flower market beneath it. Two nights at a Sundarbans lodge, reached by road and boat, for a full-day mangrove safari through the tidal creeks of the world's largest tiger reserve. It suits travellers drawn more to heritage and wildlife than the Himalayan hills.

Arrive in Kolkata — the Victoria Memorial
A direct arrival into Kolkata, by flight into Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport or by train. Once settled, the afternoon is the Victoria Memorial, the white marble hall and its sixty-four acres of gardens, and its museum of British-era Kolkata. The evening is Park Street, the city's old dining and entertainment strip, for a first Kolkata dinner.

Kolkata — Howrah Bridge and the Indian Museum
A morning at the Indian Museum, the country's oldest, for its Egyptian, Mauryan and Buddhist collections, best seen before the midday heat. The afternoon is Howrah Bridge and the Hooghly riverfront, including the Mullick Ghat flower market beneath the bridge's Kolkata end, one of the largest in Asia. A short boat ride on the river at dusk gives the classic view of the bridge lit against the sky.

Kolkata to the Sundarbans
A drive of about two and a half hours from Kolkata to Godkhali, the usual launch point for the delta, through the paddy country south of the city. From there a boat crossing of around an hour reaches the lodge, the roads giving way entirely to water. You arrive by early afternoon, with time to settle in before the first boat outing of the stay, usually a gentler village or birdwatching run rather than the full safari.
Sundarbans
Sundarbans — a Full-Day Mangrove Safari
A full day on the water, into the permitted channels of the reserve with a naturalist and, in the core zone, an armed forest-department guard as the park rules require. The boat moves slowly along the tidal creeks, watching the mud banks for pug marks and the water for crocodiles, with spotted deer, kingfishers and eagles seen far more often than the tiger itself. Lunch is taken on board or back at the lodge, depending on the tide.
Sundarbans → Kolkata
Sundarbans to Kolkata — Departure
A last, shorter boat outing if the timing allows, or a quiet morning at the lodge. The return retraces the route: a boat back to Godkhali, then the road to Kolkata, about three and a half hours door to door. It is usually timed to reach the city in the afternoon, in time for an evening flight onward or a night in Kolkata before departure.
