The World Peace Dome and its fountain garden under blue sky in Pune, Maharashtra

Overview

Pune At A Glance

Pune, Maharashtra, is the old Peshwa capital and the state's cultural heart. It is a city of wadas, temples, cafes and colleges. Few places in Maharashtra mix history and everyday energy so easily. The Peshwa story is easiest to read at Shaniwar Wada. Its great gates and stone walls stand in the old city. A short drive away, the Aga Khan Palace holds memories of Gandhi's years of internment. Both sit well in a single unhurried day. The old quarter rewards a walk. Ganpati temples, spice stalls and sweet shops share its lanes. Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati is among the best known. Pune is also a good base for the hill forts and ghats of the Sahyadri. The city lies roughly 150 km from Mumbai, about three hours by the expressway in decent traffic. It also has its own airport. Confirm timings and entry rules locally before you go.
