Alibag, Maharashtra, is the Konkan coast's easy escape from Mumbai. It is a calm stretch of beaches, coconut groves and old sea forts. You can reach it by ferry across the harbour, which is half the pleasure. The beaches are long and quiet. Alibag, Varsoli and Nagaon each have their own mood. The sea is warm, but currents can be strong, so swim only where locals advise. The light at sunset is very good. History sits at the water's edge. Kolaba Fort rises just off the main beach. Murud-Janjira, the island fort, lies further down the coast. Both reward a visit with a guide. The ferry from Mumbai to Mandwa takes roughly an hour, then a short road transfer follows. Monsoon services can be limited, so confirm schedules locally. The best months are from about October to March.
