Two days is the right length for Jodhpur. The first day goes to Mehrangarh Fort, the best fort in the city. The second goes to the blue lanes, the old market and a slow evening.

This plan keeps the days short and puts the fort early, before the heat.

Day 1: Mehrangarh Fort

Go when the fort opens. The walls rise above the city, and the museum inside holds palace rooms, an audience hall and a collection of arms and howdahs. Allow three hours or more. See our Mehrangarh Fort guide for tickets and what to see.

Have lunch in the city and rest through the hottest hours. Later, walk the old lanes below the fort when the light turns warm.

Day 2: the blue city and the market

The old town is a maze of narrow lanes with houses painted in shades of blue. A guide or a good map helps. Go in the morning, when the lanes are quiet. Respect the fact that people live here, and ask before taking close photos of residents.

After lunch, head to the clock tower market, a busy square with spice stalls, textiles and sweets. It is noisy and colourful. For what to buy, see our Rajasthan crafts and textiles guide.

End the day with a sunset view of the fort from a rooftop cafe or a viewpoint.

Where to stay

A palace or heritage hotel gives you the fort view and a calm base. See our palace hotel guide.

Getting here and onward

Jodhpur sits between Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer. For the desert leg, see the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer guide. For the full route, see the Rajasthan 10-day itinerary and the city order guide.

Practical tips

  1. Start early. The fort and the lanes are far more pleasant before midday.

  2. Wear comfortable shoes. The fort has slopes and steps.

  3. Carry water. Summer afternoons are hot.

  4. Agree guide fees first. Use official guides where you can.

  5. Keep a buffer. The old town is slow to cross by car.
